Michelin-Starred Benno Reopens at Evelyn Hotel

Chef Jonathan Benno’s Michelin-starred restaurant Benno is reopening after a nearly two-year absence due to the pandemic. Benno’s return to the Evelyn Hotel in NoMad adds a new fine dining establishment to New York’s restaurant scene with an emphasis on seafood. It follows the opening Bar Benno, a more casual concept in August.

“As a longtime New York Chef with two concepts under one roof, I want to be part of our city’s comeback,” says chef Jonathan Benno. “Both Benno and Bar Benno have my name because they truly reflect my passion for French cuisine and seafood. These restaurants also represent my commitment to New York City, the city that I call home.”

Executed by Chef de Cuisine Mark Zuckerman, the meal begins with a selection of snacks including Fondue of Jonah Crab (top) with sea urchin and vadouvan, Sea Scallop with Noilly Prat, fennel and orange, and Caviar Service with Regiis Ova Caviar.

Vegetables take center stage at the new Benno, with the return of the Coddled Egg with chanterelles and brown butter, Carnaroli Risotto with lobster mushrooms and castelrosso, and Chicory Salad with Ossau Iraty, beets, walnuts and apple.

Appetizers run the gamut from Rabbit Confit Terrine with bottarga, endive and almond to Big Eye Tuna with sea urchin, seaweed and sesame, and Squash Soup with sautéed foie gras, hazelnuts and pomegranate.

Pasta also looms large with offerings like Agnolotti with celery root, black trumpets and puffed einkorn and Russet Potato Gnocchi with Jonah crab, smoked trout roe and chili oil. Main Courses include Lobster Americaine with lobster mushrooms and fennel, Steak Au Poivre with careflex cabbage, pommes puree and peppercorn sauce, and Pekin Duck with sautéed foie gras, pear, radish, chestnut and spiked duck jus.

Dessert brings Gala Apple Cake with oat streusel and brown butter ice cream, and eau de Noisettes with hazelnut dacquoise, chocolate sponge cake and chamomile-crème fraîche ice cream.

Upscale New York inspired cocktails are also being offered like The Duke of Provence, a play on the Duke's martini, Death in the Afternoon with absinthe verte and champagne, and NY Sour with bourbon, Japanese whisky, lemon, egg white and Beaujolais.

Wagyu is the Star at Esora Omakase in East Village

Omakase is traditionally associated with sushi, but at Esora Omakase, high-end wagyu specialist J-Spec is serving a tasting menu that highlights wagyu beef, as well as tempura, at a counter seating up to 7 guests. Simply meaning “up to the chef,” omakase is not restricted to specific ingredients, however, meat is not traditionally used in tempura.

Esora Omakase is the first and only place in NYC serving wagyu tempura (above). Chef Koichi Endo creates and cooks the entire meal himself, showcasing different cuts and types of wagyu from Japan.

The meal starts with Sakizuke of three seasonal appetizers like Corn Tofu with grilled corn, wasabi and soy; Tartar of Ozaki Wagyu with Uni, and Hokkaido Scallop with Caviar. It’s followed by Sashimi of fish like sea bream and chu-toro fatty tuna, then a duo of Wagyu Sushi (one piece raw and the other torched over rice nigiri style).

Multiple pieces of tempura, including shrimp heads, seasonal vegetables and mushrooms, are also offered. The omakase menu is $185 with an optional sake pairing for $85.

The doors of the Great White Way are not just open, but they are revolving, with new productions (and new casting) being announced.

Jeremy O. Harris’ groundbreaking work “Slave Play,” which received 12 Tony Award nominations, will return to Broadway, this time at the August Wilson Theater. Performances begin on Tuesday, November 23 for a strictly limited eight-week engagement through Sunday, January 23, 2022. The production will once again be directed by Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara, and feature a mix of original cast members (including Paul Alexander Nolan and Ato Blankson-Wood) alongside Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, who will play the leading role of Kaneisha.

Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper will join fellow Tony winner LaChanze in the Broadway premiere of Alice Childress’ “Trouble in Mind,” which starts performance on October 29 at the Roundabout’s American Airlines Theater. The production, to be directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, will also feature Michael Zegen, Danielle Campbell, Jessica Frances Dukes, Brandon Micheal Hall, Simon Jones, Alex Mickiewicz and Don Stephenson.

Looking far ahead, three recent additions to the Spring 2022 calendar have already been announced: Film superstar Daniel Craig and actress Ruth Negga (above) will team for a new production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” which will begin performances on March 29 at the Lyceum Theatre; the hit musical “Beetlejuice” will re-open on April 8 at the Marquis Theatre; and Lincoln Center Theater will present a rare Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s landmark play “The Skin of Our Teeth,” beginning March 31 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.

Temperance Wine Bar in the West Village is doing brunch. With more than 100 wines available by the glass, many hand-selected by sommelier Vergel San Miguel, diners will have ample choices to accompany their meal.

On the menu, there’s Pain Perdu, a decadent sandwich of creamy peanut butter and maple black pepper bacon wedged between two slices of Pain d’Avignon Country Loaf, french-toasted and spiced with ginger and cinnamon. It is drizzled with chocolate sauce and a dusting of pink peppercorn. Classic Eggs Benedict is also served, stacked atop an English muffin with poached eggs, Canadian bacon, wilted baby kale and slathered with rich hollandaise. Shakshuka and Toast is a mix of whole plum tomatoes, garlic, jalapeno, and harissa, garnished with a slow poached egg and accompanied by buttery focaccia. A rare Korean delicacy surfaces at Jongro Gopchang in KTown

The newly opened Jongro Gopchang, from the team behind Jongro BBQ in KTown, is specializing in rare Korean specialty that is rarely found outside of Korea. It’s called Gopchang and features grilled beef intestines and other organ meats cooked tableside. It’s described as a buttery, chewy texture that pairs well with soju – it is, in fact, traditionally considered a drinking food. BBQ is available as well and cooked at the table too.

Aside from soju, the bar also features beer, wine and cocktails like Seoul Night with sparkling Korean rice wine, cinnamon punch, and black raspberry wine, and Ba-cuum made with soju, cucumber, basil and tonic.

The current resurgence and craze in Korea started with a video of K-pop star Hwasa of MAMAMOO eating Gopchang went viral. Owner Kyung Kim Choi is a successful Koreatown entrepreneur who also operates the rapidly expanding Afternoon, as well as Koreatown favorites Dons Bogam and Jongro BBQ.

NSA Noodle Bar Arrives In Williamsburg

East Meets West at NSA Noodle Bar in Williamsburg where diners can expect a mash-up of Japanese and Italian cuisine. NSA stands for No Strings Attached. Restaurateurs Chiwa Yeung and Spencer Cartledge launched the restaurant, which grew out of a ghost kitchen for their La Margarita pizzeria. It was there that they met their new executive Chef Brooke Apfelbaum who added things like truffles and wagyu beef to the toppings.

“Moulin Rouge” and Matthew Lopez’s two-part drama “The Inheritance” were the big winners at the 74th Annual Tony Awards, which were presented on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden Theatre. The Awards were aired in two parts on Paramount+ and CBS, and were hosted by Tony Award winners Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr.

“Moulin Rouge” won 10 awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction (Alex Timbers), Best Actor in a Musical (Aaron Tveit) and Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Danny Burstein). In addition, “Jagged Little Pill” picked up awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Lauren Patten) and Best Book of a Musical (Diablo Cody), and Adrienne Warren picked up the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of singer Tina Turner in “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

Jibs Fish Shack is Jammin’ at Hudson Yards

That summer feel may be winding down, but Jibs is heating up. The fish shack with stunning waterfront views and hopping bar is the newest edition to Hudson Yards. The space is decorated to the hilt with seafarer items from buoys to life preservers, as well as lots of string lights to give the space a festive feel.The open air space complete with picnic tables and booths looking onto the Hudson can also be used year round thanks to a retractable roof and large, see-through side panels.

The horseshoe-shaped bar is already buzzing with small international maritime flags flowing overhead. The food is being prepared in a kitchen set up in large shipping containers.

Think fish shack fare with a raw bar, including oysters, shrimp cocktail and fluke ceviche. Other seafood specialties include crispy calamari, baked clams, crab cakes, grilled lobster and more. There are also lobster rolls and a lobster grilled cheese. Salads, burgers, chicken fingers and Old Bay chicken are available for landlubbers. Dessert brings blueberry cobbler and rocket pops.

Just open for a few days, Jibs is already looking like a New York City seafood destination.

Set on the cobblestones of Front Street, TAGMO’s sun-drenched storefront displays delicate Indian sweets. Beyond the entrance is a cozy inner dining room offering regional fare from across India that is rarely found outside of home kitchens.

The vegetable-forward menu includes Sabudana Vada - crispy tapioca cakes with potatoes, roasted peanuts, curry leaves and green chilies with a peanut-yogurt chutney; Eral Chukka – ghee-roasted prawns with Kashmiri chilies, peppercorns, cumin seeds, tamarind and yogurt with Bengali Kitchri, a traditional rice dish; and Murgh Khatta Pyaz - tandoori oven-roasted chicken with tomatoes, cashew cream, pickled onions, ginger and garlic, served with paratha flatbread. For dessert, Sahni is offering a Mithai Flight featuring 6-pieces of house-made Indian sweets, such as Besan Ladoo, Pistachio Burfi and Chocolate Kaju Katli; plus, Firni, rice pudding with macerated berries and rose syrup.

From the bar comes cocktails like Tamarind Tiger with soju, fresh tamarind, ginger syrup, and lime; and Tamarind Mango Spritz with club soda, fresh tamarind, ginger syrup, mango juice, and lime.

Designed by Prutha Raithatha, the interior is adorned in vibrant jewel tones, gold accents and tropical plants. A life-size mural of a tigress greets guests at the entrance, leading to a velvet watercolor banquet that seats 20 guests. Persian black and white tiles lie underfoot and sea-blue glass light fixtures with gold tassels hang overhead.

Before opening as a restaurant, TAGMO (the Bhutanese word for tigress) started as a small-batch sweets company in 2019, later expanding to online meal deliveries.

Look Who is Going To Be On Broadway This Fall

Lots of new names – and familiar faces – will be stepping on the stage of the Great White Way this fall. Over at Ethel Barrymore, country music superstar Jennifer Nettles will star as Jenna in the hit musical “Waitress” from October 17 through November 24. In addition, Maiesha McQueen and Ashley Blanchet are set to join the cast on Tuesday, October 5 as Becky and Dawn respectively, replacing current cast members Charity Angél Dawson and Caitlin Houlahan.

Broadway star Heidi Blickenstaff will step into the leading role of Mary Jean Healy in the musical, “Jagged Little Pill,” which return to the Broadhurst Theatre on October 21. Casting has been announced for the new one-part version of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which begins performances November 12 at the Lyric Theatre. La Rotisserie Looks Beyond Chicken

If you’re in the camp that everything tastes better when it’s spit-roasted in a rotiserrie, then look no further than La Rotisserie in New York City. Located in the former Le Coq Rico space, owner Francis Staub is using centuries-old French techniques to turn out tantalizing spit-roasted birds, including whole Muscovy duck and a Sasso chicken raised on Pennsylvania farms. The chicken is seasoned simply with salt, pepper, garlic and thyme and roasted undisturbed for 50 minutes. It’s offered with sauces such as sauce verte with herbs, garlic and anchovy; café de Paris butter with herbs, spices, Cognac and lemon; sauce poivre, a peppery blend of Cognac, cream, shallots, sherry vinegar and jus.

Staub is also going beyond birds with spit-roasted boneless prime short rib and salmon “tournedos,” roasted vertically with vegetables. The best way to sample everything is with the Rotisseur’s Menu which offers a choice of roast chicken, duck or short rib (or all three) with green salad and rotisserie potatoes for $42 at dinner and $22 at lunch. Cold beer, good food, friendly service and lots of TV screens are what makes up a great sports bar. Yard House in Times Square hits the mark on all counts.

On the ground floor is a sprawling bar with more than 130 beers on tap. Picking one can be a daunting challenge, but our bartender was helpful in narrowing it down from name brands, to hard-to-find varieties to house brews. We settled on a house Pilsner which was quite refreshing. Beers come in two sizes; pints and 23-ounce towers that stand about a foot and a half tall.

The space is attractive with ample seating for small and large groups as well as cushioned booths. A smaller bar can also be found on the second floor.

The menu also boasts more than 100 items ranging from bar snacks and wings to prime burgers, beer-battered fish and chips, street tacos, salads, steaks and more. Prices to be quite affordable with a 1/2 LB cheddar burger weighing in at under 14 bucks with crispy fries.

Yard House is intent on making you feel comfortable whether you’re alone looking for a bite at the bar, or joining a large group after work. Think of it as an over-sized Cheers!

Downtown's Alamo Drafthouse to Offer Outdoor Movies

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will offer a taste of its movie programming with three free-admission outdoor screenings on the Fosun Plaza at its soon-to-open new location at 28 Liberty.

The screenings will take place every Thursday night at 7pm from September 30 through October 14. Full casting has been announced for the Tony Award-winning production of “Dear Evan Hansen,” which will reopen on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre on December 11. Directed by Michael Greif, the show features a book by Steven Levenson and a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

“Curtain Up!” a three-day series of theater-related events to mark the return of Broadway -- created by Playbill in partnership with The Broadway League and the Times Square Alliance -- will take place on Friday, September 17th through Sunday, September 19th in Times Square, stretching between 45th and 48th Streets.

The series will kick off at noon Friday with an event hosted by Broadway stars Norm Lewis and Michael Urie. It will also feature guest speakers from Playbill, The Broadway League and the Times Square Alliance, along with Commissioner Anne Del Castillo of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Vikki Been, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's new exhibit, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” opening on September 18, launches a two-part exploration of fashion in the United States in the Anna Wintour Costume Center. Approximately 100 men's and women's ensembles by a diverse range of designers from the 1940s to the present are featured. Complete casting has been announced for the Broadway return of “The Phantom of the Opera.” Directed by the late Harold Prince, the show is set to resume performances on Friday, October 22 at The Majestic Theatre (245 West 44th Street) – the musical’s New York home for all 33 record-breaking years.

Tony Award winner Leslie Odom. Jr will host “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!” on Sunday, September 26, which will air on CBS from 9pm-11pm.

This unprecedent event will feature superstar Broadway entertainers and Tony Award winners re-uniting on stage to perform beloved classics and celebrate the joy and magic of live theatre; special performances from the three Tony nominated Best Musical contenders -- “Moulin Rouge,” “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” and “Jagged Little Pill”; and the live presentation of three Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Musical.

The presentation of majority of the American Theatre Wing’s 74th Annual Tony Awards at 7pm, to be hosted by six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, will stream live exclusively on the Paramount+ network.

Odom won the Tony and Grammy Awards for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton.” Earlier this year, he received two Academy Award nominations for co-starring in and writing songs for the acclaimed film “One Night in Miami.” Currently, he can be heard voicing the character of ‘Owen Tillerman’ in Season 2 of the Apple TV+ animated musical-comedy series “Central Park” and will star in David Chase’s “Sopranos” prequel, “Many Saints of Newark,” which is set to be released in theatres on October 1.

While Broadway may have officially “re-opened” a few weeks ago, theatergoers are particularly excited about what’s happening this week, as one new show and six returning shows make their way to the Great White Way.

On September 14, Ruben Santiago-Hudson acclaimed autobiographical solo show, “Lackawanna Blues,” begins previews at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (in anticipation of a September 25 opening). That same night, four blockbusters are back on the block: “Hamilton” comes back to the Richard Rodgers Theatre; “The Lion King” lands again at the Minskoff Theatre, “Wicked” finds it’s good to be (back) home at the Gershwin Theatre; and the long-running hit “Chicago” kicks up it heels at the Ambassador Theatre.

Honoring the Victims of 9/11 Terror Attacks 20 Years Later

On September 11, 2021, Americans across the nation will honor the victims of the 2,996 people who died from the terror attacks on 9/11 and those who have died since from 9/11-related illnesses.

The ceremony will include the reading of the names by family members in-person and several moments of silence, starting at 8:46am when American Airline Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and at 9:03am when United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.

At 9:40am a third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon, and at 10:03am when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

At sundown, the annual “Tribute in Light” will once again illuminate the sky in commemoration of the attacks from two 48-foot squares comprised of nearly 89,000 lights visible for some 60 miles around Manhattan.

Our quest to find the best bites in New York City takes us to Barn Joo in NoMad, an Asian gastropub serving up intricate cocktails and delicious small plates. We stopped in for the Soft Shell Crab. It’s cooked in a light rice batter until golden brown with a sweet potato crunch and lively salsa on top, tangy house-made tartar sauce and pickled ginger. It makes for one terrific bite!

Kyuramen Draws a Crowd in the East Village

A new ramen spot has popped up on 14th Street in the East Village. Kyuramen has a bit of a tiki feel with lots of bamboo and counter that overlooks the open kitchen. Kyuramen offers three types of ramen found in Japan with the focus on the preparation of the Chashu pork. Dishes include the Tokyo Tonkotsu Shouyu served with pork chashu, bamboo shoot, wakame, half marinated egg, nori, corn, and scallion in pork broth. There’s also Tonkatsu Curry Ramen and Thai Tom Yam Ramen with shrimp, among others. Steamed Pork Bao Buns, Takoyaki Octopus Balls, and Okonomiyaki, a Japanese style pan-fried pancake, are counted among the appetizers. As Broadway prepares for its comeback, some familiar names in the Theater District are also poised to reopen.

Carmine’s Italian Restaurant in Times Square has a sign out front that reads simply, “See you in September.” The restaurant is known for its Southern Italian cuisine and large plates for sharing.

Sardi’s is setting the stage for a reopening sometime in early Fall. The Broadway legend has been closed for much of the pandemic as Broadway remained shuttered.

And John’s of Times Square, also on West 44^th Street, is now expected to reopen on September 13^th. John’s is best known for its thin-crust, brick oven pizzas.

One restaurant not returning is The Ribbon. It is being replaced by Bacall’s Family Steakhouse which is set to open on September 17^th.

Burgers, shakes and cheesesteaks are among the comfort foods awaiting at Mr. Chips, a retro-style diner with comfy booths now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Breakfast brings oversized sausages with house-made home fries served with choice of eggs, or omelets. The restaurant is also offering a rendition of chicken and waffles with crispy chicken strips. Burgers start with a thick juicy patty stacked high with cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato. There is also a “Max” version which includes chili.

Cheesesteaks arrive on a crispy baguette smothered with sautéed onions. Both the burger and cheesestaeak are served with a healthy portion of fries. Looking for something lighter, Cobb, Greek and Caesar salads are offered with an optional chicken add-on. Shakes come in traditional flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, along with pistachio, black & white and Oreo cookie.

The historic Feast of San Gennaro, an 11-day street party and celebration, will run from Thursday, September 16 and continue through Sunday, September 26, 2021. This year's feast will honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and is dedicated to all of our First Responders and their families.

Feast highlights include: The 23rd Annual Cannoli Eating Competition, Zeppole Eating Competition, Opera Night with Cheryl Warfield & Patrick Hale, the Annual Grand Parade and more!

NYC Bites - Papaya Salad at Wayla

Wayla is known for its Thai Street foods. At Time Out Market in DUMBO you can get a taste of some of these vibrant dishes. While the options are not as broad at Wayla’s East Village location, there is plenty to enjoy.

One such dish is the made-to-order Papaya Salad. Shredded green papaya, long beans, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, lime and chilis are pounded in a large mortar and pestle releasing all of the flavors. Heat levels range from mild to spicy. Most people get it topped with grilled jumbo shrimps. It’s a remarkable dish.

Other offerings include street-style chicken wings with plum sauce and toasted sesame seeds; Thai style pork ribs with a soy honey glaze and pickles; and lump crab fried rice.

Hamilton's Nik Walker to lead Broadway's Ain't too Proud

Complete casting has been announced for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations,” which will return to the Imperial Theatre (249 West 45th Street) with a gala performance on Saturday, October 16.

The show, which features a score of Motown’s greatest hits, is directed by Des McAnuff, choreographed by Sergio Trujillo and has a book by Dominique Morriseau.

The cast will be led by “Hamilton” star Nik Walker as Otis Williams, James Harkness as Paul Williams, Jawan M. Jackson as Melvin Franklin, Matt Manuel as David Ruffin and Jelani Remy as Eddie Kendricks. The company also features Esther Antoine, Saint Aubyn, E. Clayton Cornelious, J. HOWM Cocina & Cocktails is making its debut at the Salena Chelsea. The restaurant, part of the Gilded Group, is serving Mesoamerican cuisine. Look for lively Latin fare such as ceviche, Salvadoran papusas with tangy fermented vegetables and a brussels and herb salad. Cocktails include the Drink Me Up with guayusa-infused vodka, cacao liqueur, lemon and vermouth, and the Martin el Sucio with blanco tequila, mezcal, dry vermouth, orange bitters, and a garlic smoke rinse.
