Moulin Rouge Wins Big At 74th Annual Tony Awards

“Moulin Rouge” and Matthew Lopez’s two-part drama “The Inheritance” were the big winners at the 74th Annual Tony Awards, which were presented on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden Theatre. The Awards were aired in two parts on Paramount+ and CBS, and were hosted by Tony Award winners Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr.
“Moulin Rouge” won 10 awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction (Alex Timbers), Best Actor in a Musical (Aaron Tveit) and Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Danny Burstein). In addition, “Jagged Little Pill” picked up awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Lauren Patten) and Best Book of a Musical (Diablo Cody), and Adrienne Warren picked up the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of singer Tina Turner in “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

As for plays, “The Inheritance” won awards for Best Play, Best Direction (Stephen Daldry), Best Actor in a Play (Andrew Burnap) and Best Supporting Actress in a Play (Lois Smith). In other categories, Mary-Louise Parker won Best Actress in a Play for her work in “The Sound Inside,” while David Alan Grier took home the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “A Soldier’s Story,” which also won Best Revival of Play. Meanwhile, “A Christmas Carol” took home four Tony Awards, including Best Score.

As previously reported here, special Tony Awards were given to the shows “American Utopia” and “Freestyle Love Supreme” and the Broadway Advocacy Coalition. Moreover, actress Julie Halston received the Isabelle Stevenson Award for her charitable work with the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation; Tony Award-nominated director and choreographer Graciela Daniele was the 2020 recipient of the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre; and the 2020 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre were presented to four outstanding contributors to the Broadway industry: Fred Gallo, President of PRG Scenic Technologies; Broadway press agent Irene Gandy; stage manager Beverly Jenkins and the New Federal Theatre and its founder, Woodie King, Jr.
