Photo: Cecily Strong

For many people, few thrills compare to seeing one of your favorite television stars live and in person. In January, you might very well get your wish!

A stalwart of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” Cecily Strong is no stranger to playing multiple characters. Now, she’s taking on about a dozen of them in one evening in a rare revival of the Tony-winning play “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” now in previews at The Shed at Hudson Yards (www.shed.org)

To some of us Phylicia Rashad will always be the no-nonsense Dr. Clair Huxtable of “The Cosby Show.” But Rashad is also a brilliant, Tony-winning stage actress, so it’s a thrill to have her back on the boards in Dominique Morriseau’s superb play “Skeleton Crew,” about a determined group of workers in an embattled Detroit factory, now at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (www.mtc.org)

Photo: Phylicia Rashad

As a member of the legendary band, The Roots, Tariq Trotter comes into our living rooms constantly on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” In January, he co-stars alongside Emmy Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) in the New Group’s highly awaited Off-Broadway musical “Black No More” – for which he also wrote the music! The production begins January 11 at the Pershing Square Signature Theater Center (www.newgroup.org)

A three-time Obie Award winner, Elizabeth Marvel has also lived up to her last name in such popular series as “Manifest” and “Homeland.” Starting in January 11, she’s taking on one of the theatre world’s most demanding roles, Mary Tyrone in Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night,” in an unusual two-hour version at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theater opposite real-life husband Bill Camp (“The Queen’s Gambit”). (www.ticketmaster.com)

Photo: Tracy Morgan

Another SNL favorite, the hilarious Tracy Morgan – who also starred on “30 Rock” and “The Last OG” – brings his latest stand-up comedy act “Working It Out” to the ever-popular Caroline’s on Broadway, January 13-15. (www.carolines.com)

As media magnate Logan Ray on HBO’s must-watch drama “Succession,” Brian Cox has further cemented his reputation as one of the world’s greatest actors. He’s a darn good speaker too, as audiences at the 92nd Street Y will discover on January 21 as he discusses his upcoming memoir “Putting the Rabbit in the Hat.” (www.92Y.org)

Cititour's Top 10 Broadway Performances of 2021
December 27, 2021, 12:56.23 am ET
Details

By Brian Scott Lipton

Even with a shortened Broadway “season” that ran from August to December, I saw more than enough great performances the past few months to justify making this top-10 list! So, here in alphabetical order, are Cititour’s 2021 Broadway All-Stars:

Photo: Clyde's Joan Marcus

Uzo Aduba: Clyde’s
Outfitted in a succession of brilliant, body-enhancing costumes by Jennifer Moeller, Aduba is alternately hilarious and terrifying as the devilish owner of a Pennsylvania truck-stop who makes life hell-on-earth for her terrified employees. Unsurprisingly, the Emmy-winning actress knows how to make an entrance – and an exit!

Photo: The Lehman Trilogy/Julieta Cervantes

Simon Russell Beale: The Lehman Trilogy
Proving once again that he’s one of England’s greatest stage actors – not that he needs to do so – Beale seamlessly transforms from character to character over this magnificent show’s three-plus hours, making us invest in every member of the legendary family he portrays.

Photo: Flying Over Sunset/Joan Marcus

Carmen Cusack: Flying Over Sunset
Even if this ambitious yet problematic musical never quite proves worthy of her talents, Cusack is consistently fascinating as the troubled writer and politician Clare Boothe Luce, struggling to find both love and purpose despite her fame and wealth. If she doesn’t touch your heart, you may not have one!

Photo: Caroline or Change/Joan Marcus

Sharon D. Clarke: Caroline or Change.
As the perpetually angry and disappointed Louisiana maid in Tony Kushner and Jeanine Testori’s brilliant musical, Clarke brings audiences at Studio 54 to their feet night after night with her powerful voice and presence, almost literally raising the roof with her “11 o’clock number,” the extraordinary “Lot’s Wife.”

Photo: Trouble In Mind/Joan Marcus

LaChanze: Trouble in Mind
As the ultimately frustrated African American actress Wiletta Mayer in Alice Childress’ still-relevant 1955 play. LaChanze deftly uses her superb comic timing, unerring dramatic instincts, and even her almost supernatural singing chops to create a truly three-dimensional woman worthy of our time – and any time!

Photo: Company/Matthew Murphy

Patti LuPone: Company
One of the theater world’s greatest performers. LuPone not only perfectly embodies the deliciously acidic, obviously unhappy Joanne in this landmark musical revival, but her brilliantly pointed rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s vodka-stinging diatribe “The Ladies Who Lunch” more than does its job: it absolutely stops the show. We’ll drink to that!

Photo: Mrs. Doubtfire/Joan Marcus

Rob McClure: Mrs. Doubtfire
The ever-inventive McClure fills the late Robin Williams’ daunting shoes and padded outfits in this musical adaptation of the popular film. He does countless impressions and voices with aplomb, throws off the script’s one-liners with perfect timing and interacts touchingly – and often hysterically with everyone around him.

Photo: Dana H./Chad Batka

Deirdre O’Connell: Dana H.
Portraying playwright Lucas Hnath’s mother, Dana Higginbotham, who survived a terrible kidnapping ordeal in 1997, it’s almost impossible to believe O’Connell is actually lip-syncing pre-recorded dialogue in this shattering solo play. Indeed, what O’Connell delivers is one of the most in-the-moment performances I’ve ever witnessed.

Photo: Six/Joan Marcus

Anna Uzele: Six
While she’s totally effective as part of the show’s incredible six-woman ensemble, when Uzele finally gets her star turn as Henry’s last -- and surviving -- wife Catherine Parr, she simply commands the stage like a true queen, proving herself first among equals.

Photo: Girl from North Country/Matthew Murphy

Mare Winningham: Girl from the North Country
As the mentally challenged wife Elizabeth in Conor McPherson’s musical – with songs by the great Bob Dylan -- Winningham is often unbelievably funny, bringing a much-needed levity to the often dour proceedings. Plus, her renditions of two of Dylan’s best-known numbers, “Like a Rollling Stone” and “Forever Young,” sung in a strong pop-country voice, are simply indelible.

Peasant is Putting a new Spin on Espresso Martinis

Photo: Michael Condran

Beverage Director Scott Woltz of Peasant, led by Chef Marc Forgione, is crafting a list of Espresso Martinis using Amaro in place of traditional vodka. We’re told the idea came to Woltz after a boozy lunch with a friend after misreading a restaurant’s after-dinner menu.

The result is a cocktail that replaces vodka with various types of amaro including the Alpine Espresso Martini which incorporates Braulio Amaro, known for its foresty, herbaceous, and piney notes; Mint Espresso Martini with Fernet Branca, the popular Italian digestif made with a secret mix of herbs including myrrh, saffron, chamomile and gentian; and the Peppery Espresso Martini using Luxardo Amaro Abano, which has an assertive zesty and peppery aroma. In all, there are five different cocktails to choose from.

Peasant (194 Elizabeth St, NYC) is also known for its seasonal Italian menu including hand-made pastas and wood-fired dishes served in a rustic setting.

La Devozione, which means “The Devotion" in English, is Pastificio Di Martino's first foray into the U.S. market. The Oval, with its open-air kitchen, serves as a pasta bar seating up to 30 guests. It is made of light wood with navy blue Ozzio leather chairs. Here four chefs can be found cooking up dishes like Spaghettini al Limone; Vermicelli with burro, alici e tartufo bianco (white truffle); Ziti alla Genovese di anatra (duck) all’arancia; and of course La Devozione. The cost is $165 per person. Guests will also find a nice selection of wines from Italy, France and the United States.

“To be here, finally, means so much to me,” says CEO & President of Pastificio Di Martino Giuseppe Di Martino (above). “It’s been a dream to open in Chelsea Market, a historic New York City landmark, and finally after nearly five years and a pandemic we are doing it.

Located within La Devozione’s pasta shop you will find A Tavola, area with additional seating offering a more casual, á la carte menu with a selection of starters along with rotating seasonal pastas and signature favorites. Outdoor seating is set to arrive in 2022. Visitors can also choose Spaghetti To-Go from a counter facing out onto Chelsea Market’s main concourse. Review: Flying Over Sunset is a Long, Strange Trip
Photos: Joan Marcus

By Brian Scott Lipton

In the landmark 1960s musical “Hair,” we’re told that “LBJ took the IRT down to 4th Street USA” where he saw “the youth of America on LSD.” Now, in the new Broadway musical “Flying Over Sunset,” at Lincoln Center Theatre at the Vivian Beaumont, we discover that a full decade earlier, LSD was used (legally) by America’s much older elite – not just to have a “groovy” trip but to face their true selves and perhaps banish bad memories. And while “Flying Over Sunset” shares the same sense of originality as “Hair,” the show is, sadly, somewhat more successful as a history lesson than as a fully entertaining musical. Read Full Review

Bonnie’s Brings Cantonese-American Cooking to Williamsburg

Photo: Bonnie's/Adam Friedlander

Bonnie’s, the new Cantonese restaurant by Chef Alvin Eng (formerly of Win Son), is named after Chef Eng’s mother who influenced his cooking while growing up. Eng, who says he tried to be “as American as possible,” is now embracing his Chinese-American roots while offering a new spin on traditional dishes.

Look for things like clams & black bean garlic sauce with savory egg custard and sizzling herbs; fish + shrimp wontons with a citrus parm broth; Deboned and stuffed rainbow trout; and a “Cha Siu McRib” made with cha siu-glazed steamed ribs with Chinese hot mustard, B&B pickles and a milk bun. For dessert, there’s the Chow Nai Sundae with vanilla ice cream, malted fried milk, Ovaltine hot fudge and buttered peanuts.

Inventive cocktails are also being served at Bonnie's, like Black Tea Penicillin (ceylon scotch, ginger, lemon, spiced honey + peated scotch) and House Shot (chrysanthemum, goji berry, lychee + blanc vermut). Several non-alcoholic cocktails are also available.

Bonnie’s is located at 398 Manhattan Ave in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Kimchi Kooks Adds Some Spice to Brooklyn

Details

Photos: Cititour.com

On a quiet street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn you might not expect to find a shop dedicated to kimchi, the Korean superfood, similar to sauerkraut that is known for its probiotic properties.

The force behind Kimchi Kooks is Kate Kook and her son, WooJae Chung. Some of the recipes originate with Kook’s grandfather who operated the Kumbong Brewery in Seoul, South Korea from the early 1920s to the 1960s.

Kook put that knowledge to work when she arrived in New York City in 1999. She began experimenting with various kimchi recipes, and came up with her own “White Kimchi” and also trademarked the term “Kimchi’d.” She has since expanded the menu to include things like Banchan, small side dishes meant to be eaten with rice, and sauces known as Yangnyeom.

On weekdays you will also find Bokkum, sautéed dishes offered with choice of protein and fresh vegetables served “hot” or home-style. It arrives with a side of rice (a mix of white and wild) helping to create a meal.

The weekend brings specials like Seoul Remedy Soup meant to rejuvenate. It is made with Korean radish, scallion and mushrooms. Another dish, Dweji Galbi, grilled pork ribs marinated with Kate’s Galbi Yangnyeom, is also offered along with Doenjang Jjigae, a stew made with fermented soybean paste, pork, potato, zucchini, onion and tofu. A vegan option made with mushrooms is also available. Bulgogi and bibimbap are also served at times while supplies last.

The refrigerator at Kimchi Kooks is also worth exploring. Aside from assorted house-made Kimchis, including kale and beet, there are things like lotus root pancakes and sautéed tofu sold in small containers.

Kimchi Kooks is located at 119 Bay Ridge Ave, Brooklyn, NY

For a musical that was once described as being “too New York for New York,” Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1970 musical comedy “Company,” now at the Bernard P. Jacobs Theatre, is the perfect antidote for Gothamites who have survived the pandemic. It’s a potent reminder that without “company” around us – whether they be friends, lovers or spouses -- we are not fully alive. Read Full Review

More importantly, though, the now 3 ½-hour play at the gorgeous Lyric Theatre has the sort of emotional heft missing from too many stage dramas. Read Full Review
