One of the hottest spots in Chinatown is Yin Ji Chang Fen, well known for its rice noodles in China, and now in New York City. People have been lining up for a taste and I am here to say that it is worth the wait. You enter a bright, modern space with exposed brick and large windows. Each table has a nice supply of hot sauce and neon green chopsticks. You are greeted with a smile, and considering the line out the door, I never felt rushed. Food is served three ways; as snacks, congee and the restaurant's famous Guangzhou rolls. The latter are delicate ribbons of rice noodles served with soy sauce. Ours were filled with marinated pork, fresh shrimp and chives. It's a dish usually reserved for dim sum parlors, and these are truly heavenly. Other fillings include chicken & chive, pork liver, BBQ pork and marinated beef. Congee is another popular dish here. It is served piping hot in large bowls with a choice of pork, beef, shrimp and fish, along with more exotic flavors like pork blood jello. Snacks include fish balls floating atop a slick of spicy curry sauce. Pull one off a skewer, give it a dip, and enjoy. Deep fried fish skin, Ham Chim Peng (a type of fried dough) and toast with butter condensed milk can also be found. When I asked the gentleman seated next to me what he thought, he said, “Good, and cheap!” There really is no dish over seven dollars (excluding add-ons). Among the drinks, there is Hong Kong-style frozen milk tea served in a bowl of crushed ice. Yin Ji Chang Fen is a great addition toe Chinatown.
