Where to celebrate the Lunar New Year in New York City

Lotus + Cleaver, the newly opened Chinese fast casual restaurant in Long Island City, is offering a Prosperity Salad ($28) to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It serves serves 2-4 people and includes salmon sashimi, house marinated ikura, oishii shrimp, shredded vegetables, house-made pickles, candied peanuts, and crispy taro tossed together with a salted plum dressing. Pick-up only, with pre-order via RESY required at least 24 hours in advance.
Tteokguk Rice Cake Soup/Soogil
While Lunar New Year is typically associated with China, other Asian countries like Korea also celebrate it. Korean Chef Soogil Lim of Soogil will serve complimentary Tteokguk, the traditional Korean soup eaten to welcome the new year, to diners on Thursday 2/11 and Friday 2/12 who order the restaurant’s tasting menu for outdoor dining. Tteokguk is a beef-broth based soup (guk) served with a thinly sliced rice cakes (tteok), as well as seasoned beef, julienned boiled eggs and seaweed. The dish is traditionally eaten in Korea on (Lunar) New Year’s Day for good luck in the new year.
BÀO Tea House is offering a box of buns. The kit comes with six piece of pork belly and six rice buns to create some Chinese New Year treats at home. The kits cost $25 and can be ordered via the company website. Homemade hot sauce is available for an additional $3 fee. The link to purchase will be live on 2/8.
