There's nothing evil about Evil Katsu on the LES
February 16, 2021, 12:21.41 am ET
Don't let the name Evil Katsu intimidate you. The only thing you'll need to feel guilty about is the pure satisfaction it brings from indulging in a premium katsu sandwich. The shop is actually a pop-up located in the back of Pretty Ricky's on the Lower East Side with dreams of becoming a full-scale restaurant. Life in the pandemic has created a number of interesting relationships like this one where restaurants benefit by helping each other navigate through difficult times.
What Evil Katsu has going for it is the food. We stopped in for a Pork Sando which was amazing. The marinated center cut pork cutlet is double-fried until the outer shell is nice and crispy and the meat inside is tender and juicy. The pork is sandwiched between thick slices of milk toast with two types of slaw, red cabbage and carrot, with a nice slather of nori kewpie. It's indulgent and delicious. Chicken and portobello versions are also available.
If you are looking for something a bit more substantail, you can order a box set complete with cutlet, rice and two sides. Choices include potato or egg salad and marinated mushrooms. The sets and sandos each come with a portion of house-made pickles served in a little boat that you won't want to pass up.
Right now, Evil Katsu is strictly takeout and delivery, but who knows, maybe sometime in the near future you'll be able to dine in.
Evil Katsu is located at 101 Rivington St, New York, NY (973) 255-0255
