The Little Island, New York City's newest park, is officially open to the public. Located on the Hudson River above what was Pier 55, this magnificent outdoor space was developed in large part by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation.
The park, which cost $260 million to build, is an entirely new type of public space atop champagne glass-shaped concrete pilings giving it an air of whimsy. The Little Island officially opens on May 21 at 6am and will remain open until 1am daily. The Island features 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs and includes a 687-seat amphitheater and a central plaza, called "The Play Ground" where food and beverages are served, and an intimate stage and lawn space called "The Glade."
Beginning this June, Little Island will serve as home to Artists-in-Residence with singing, dancing, theatrical productions and storytelling by local artists. Signature events will include award-winning Broadway Inspirational Voices, a Pride Week celebration and a live performance by the American Ballet Theatre.
Little Island is located at 13th Street in Hudson River Park. Timed reservations are required between 12pm and 8pm. Admission is free.
