Continuum: Violinist Nick Kendall begins his three-year residency with Lincoln Center with these four free shows (August 16, 17, 19, 20) to be presented in the underground Jaffe Drive at Lincoln Center. Kendall's informal and spontaneous collaborations are designed to create emotional and personal connections between the audience and artists, who include pianist Steve Hackman, singer-songwriter Michael Thurber, Broadway star Amber Iman, composers Becca Stevens and Nathan Schram and the band Times for Three. www.lincolncenter.org
Ni Mi Madre: Arturo Luis Soria’s timely play invites audiences into the tumultuous relationship between a Brazilian woman and her queer son -- laying bare the secrets, memories, fears, and celebrations of being an immigrant and first-generation American. Playing at the Rattlestick Theatre (224 Waverly Place) through September 23. www.rattlestick.org
Michelle Zauner: Indie musician and author of the bestselling memoir, “Crying in H Mart,” Zauner will visit the 92Y on Thursday, August 19 at 7:30 pm for a conversation with writer E. Alex Jung. She will discuss the inception of both the book and her new album “Jubilee,” the challenges of writing about grief while making music about joy, the contrasts between writing books and writing songs and much more. www.92Y.org
Islander: Playwright Liza Birkenmeier and director Katie Brook’s fascinating new theatrical collaboration, now being presented at HERE (145 Sixth Avenue) from August 19 to September 4, repurposes verbatim NHL commentary from the abysmal 2017-2018 New York Islanders season into a sharp comedy about white male fragility, expressiveness, and shame. Sports and theater: now that’s a winning combination! www.here.org
Norbert Leo Butz: The two-time Tony Award winner returns to Feinstein’s/54 Below from August 19-21 for his third original show; this one is inspired by seven months of isolation in Vancouver while filming the NBC series "Debris". Accompanying himself, the multi-talented performer will offer up an intimate set of tunes – including songs by Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Oh, and each night will feature a duet with a surprise special guest. www.54Below.com
