Puppets of New York: This new exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York (starting August 12), running in conjunction with the International Puppet Fringe Festival NYC, explores the extraordinary, surprising, and diverse history of New York City’s quirkiest residents. From Punch and Judy to Oscar the Grouch, Lamb Chop and The Lion King, the marionettes, shadow figures, and rod and hand puppets of New York have regaled our stages, studios, and streets. A number of companion exhibits also run at The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center. (107 Suffolk Street). www.mcny.org

Cow Parade 2021: Starting on August 18, the five boroughs will soon be awash in cattle – painted ones, of course – that have been created by over 75 artists and celebrities, including actors David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris, the multi-talented Cynthia Erivo, fashion designer Jeffrey Banks and more. Proceeds from a live auction will benefit God’s Love We Deliver. www.glwd.org

Afterlives: Recovering the Lost Stories of Jewish Art: This new exhibit at the Jewish Museum (starting August 20) focuses on the seizure of movement of works that were looted during World War II as they traveled through distribution centers, sits of recovery and networks of collectors. The myriad stories that will be brought forward of these remarkable paintings, drawings and Judaica will be augmented by archival documents and photographs. www.thejewishmuseum.org
