The Metropolitan Opera will begin live performances in September. First, it will present two free, pre-season performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park on September 4 and 5. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met Orchestra and Chorus, along with soloists soprano Ying Fang and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, in one of the repertory’s most epic and stirring works. The concerts commemorate the ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement between the Metropolitan Opera and its orchestra and celebrate all members of the company as it emerges from the longest closure in its history.
Next in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the Met presents its first indoor performance, “Verdi’s Requiem,” featuring a quartet of star soloists: soprano Ailyn Pérez, mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, tenor Matthew Polenzani and bass-baritone Eric Owens. While the performance is sold out, it will be transmitted live as part of “Great Performances” on PBS, with ballet star Misty Copeland hosting the program from nearby the site of the 9/11 Museum. Live audio from the performance will also be broadcast directly outside the Met in Lincoln Center Plaza and the English-language text of the “Requiem” will also be projected onto the façade of the opera house during the performance.
Lastly, the Met's 2021-2022 season officially opens on September 27 with the first performance of “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” a new opera by Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard. Adapted from Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir, the opera will be co-directed by James A. Robinson and Camille M. Brown, feature a libretto by celebrated filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, and stars Will Liverman, Angel Blue and Latonia Moore.
