New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says New York can now reopen on May 19th as COVID cases continue to drop dramatically. New York is easing restrictions signicantly along with New Jersey and Connecticut. The limit on outdoor social gatherings increases to 500 on May 10 in New York, while the indoor gathering limit will increase to 250. Limits on large-scale indoor venue capacity will climb to 30%. Large outdoor venues can increase capacity to 33%. Proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test will still be required.

Governor Cuomo saying, "Beginning Wednesday, May 19th, most capacity restrictions will end across the tri state area that includes retail stores, food services, gyms, fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops, offices, etcetera."

Broadway may also be allowed to reopen. "We're talking to Broadway," said Cuomo, "Broadway, for example, has a schedule. They have to produce a play before they can sell the play. So there's a schedule for them. But from a capacity point of view, they can all reopen on May 19th."

Six-foot distancing rules will still be enforced in the city, limiting capacity, which has been an issue for theaters. The Broadway League has said it anticipates a fall opening, although that could be moved up after the Governor's latest guidance. According to Broadway News, producers are looking for capacity limits to near 100% as they look to restore profitability.

Separately, the Governor says New York City subways will resume 24-hour service, beginning on May 17th.
