The Statue of Liberty stands not as only one of the most remarkable statues in New York but as one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. As a gift from France in 1886 the statue is more than just a work of art, it’s a universal sign of freedom, democracy and hope. The statue known for it’s light green or more accurately patina color is a frequent spot for tourists and locals alike. The Statue is also deceptively bigger in person than it appears to be in both print and the media. From the base to the top tip of the torch, the statue is 305 feet and 6 inches tall while also weighing 450,000 pounds. Although Liberty Island is located geographically closer to New Jersey, it is and has always been part of New York State property.
As for visiting this American iconic structure, the only way to access Liberty Island is through statuecruises.com via ferry. These ferries leave every 15 minutes from Battery Park located in Manhattan from 8:30am to 4:30pm with the last return ferry departing at 6:15pm from Liberty Island. There are also ferries that depart from Liberty State Park in New Jersey which leave in the same time frame but every half hour. The Statue of Liberty is open every day except for December 25th and is definitely worth seeing at least once in person.
