Sixth Sense NYC

"A lot of people come in after a long day at work. Some people tell me they've just come in to smell," says Alecia Hamid, who, along with her father Andy, her sister Deshana, and assorted other family members, runs the very yummily scented Sixth Sense NYC. Soaps, candles, lotions, essential oils, bath products, massage oils, and incense of many varieties can be found in this small, peaceful shop, a surprising and nose-pleasing oasis in the crowds of Midtown.

Owner Andy Hamid opened the store in 1998—and has since opened a sister shop in Park Slope (217 Garfield Place) that also carries jewelry and other gift items. In the Manhattan spot, Pacifica candles in French Lilac (starting at $9) and Archipelago Botanicals candles in Juno (starting at $9) are popular. We also liked the Pacifica Ripe Bartlett Pear items (soap $6, candles starting at $9) and the Badger Balms ($12)—a balm to encourage sleep, a balm for sore muscles, and a refreshing but non-mediciney chest rub. The contents of the sale basket vary, but the price is always $5 per item; when we visited, it held some nice-looking (and great-smelling) soaps and creams. Books on aromatherapy and other holistic areas start at $5.95.

Despite its name, Sixth Sense focuses mostly on enjoyment and health, not spirits and the unknown. But some customers are looking for far more than a pleasing scent. "Yesterday someone came in saying there was a ghost in her house, throwing her pots around and moving her things where she couldn't find them," Alecia says. The customer left with a sage-scented smudge stick; reports on how it worked haven't yet come in. With ghost issues, Sixth Sense may or may not be able to help out; but if you need a fragrant pick-me-up (or calm-me-down, or clear-my-head…), this is the place. "I leave work smelling great!" Alecia reports. "Everyone wants to know what I'm wearing—but it's just the store."   - Pamela Grossman; 05, 2004
