Neighborhood: Chelsea
Type of Place: Antiques/Crafts

Description:
Before Chelsea was on the map. Before all the clubs and art galleries moved in. Before all the fancy restaurants and high-priced condos were built, there was Nelson Antiques.

The shop has been around for more than 15 years. Back then owner Marion Nelson was a pioneer. Now the area is hotter than ever, which is both a godsend and a curse. Rising rents and property values are forcing old-timers out. But Nelson has managed to survive, in part because of its unique assortment of gifts and antiques, and the knowledge of its owner.

The shop's specialty is Russian art. We were impressed with the line of Lomonosov porcelan figurines. If they look like they were made by old world craftsmen, it's probably because they are. Lomonosov uses the same molds today as it did in 1744. We were drawn in by the collection of forest animals in the window. We were equally surprised by the prices, which start as around $20.

Nelson's is worth a visit whether you're buying or simply browsing.
