Description:
You probably already know about Betsey Johnson and have seen a few of her stores, in NYC and throughout the country—Betsey and her style are hard to miss. Her shop interiors are bright pink; her legendary designs (roseprint-covered bustiers and form-fitting, snap-front sundresses are classics) announce a woman who knows that sexy can and should have a great sense of humor.

Betsey's been going strong with her business for years, to the delight of women across the globe—and those who like to see those women in great outfits. You may not know that Betsey was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago and has been active in fundraising for related causes ever since. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Betsey Johnson shops nationwide are helping to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition, a group geared toward women diagnosed with the disease before the age of 40.

To this end, pink tank tops and long-sleeved shirts with hot pink lip-prints on the front and "Courage Girlfriend!—Betsey Johnson" on the back are on sale for $44, with 25 percent of the proceeds going to YSC. At a recent benefit at her Wooster Street store, Betsey (with her Maltese, Lucy—on a pink leash, of course) looked glorious, as did the quickly selling fall items around the shop. She co-hosted the party with Geralyn Lucas, young author of the recent memoir "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy," who is also engaged in a significant amount of fundraising and awareness-raising related to breast cancer—and whose vivacity matches Betsey's own. The duo presided over a packed room and a great party, proving without question that not only is there life after a breast cancer diagnosis, but there's joy and laughter as well. A shopping trip to Betsey Johnson is advisable at any time of year—but if you can make it to one of her stores in October for a "Courage Girlfriend" t-shirt, so much the better.
