V{IV}, Hell's Kitchen, NYC, Pineapple Fried Rice

V{IV} is a funky spot in Hell’s Kitchen known for its Thai food and cocktails. Even during the pandemic, it embraced life with style and flair. Cocktails are key. There’s a full list of designer martinis and fruity concoctions, two of which stood out to us.

V{IV}, Hell's Kitchen, NYC, Evergreen Elixier

Evergreen Elixir is a neon colored drink that explodes with flavor. It’s made with Ketel One Cucumber, Mint Vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, freshly squeezed cucumber and lime juice. It’s topped with a skewered slice of cucumber. Sexy and delicious.

V{IV}, Hell's Kitchen, NYC, Mekhong Delta

The Mekhong Delta is another charmer. It’s a mix of Mekhong Rum, Pineapple and orange juice, Bruce Cost Ginger Ale, grenadine, angostura and orange bitters. It’s layered like a sunset and topped with skewered cherries and an orange slice. Fresh and fabulous.

And so is the food, everything from chicken satays and pineapple fried rice, BBQ spare ribs and Duck Tamarind, perfect for sharing with some drinks. Our personal favorite is the Phuket Shrimp, chicken stuffed tiger prawns served with a tamarind dipping sauce.

Escape to the Greek islands without leaving the city. Skorpios in Midtown boasts four indoor waterfalls cascading down marble pillars, an expansive rock wall and a 32-foot sand art wall providing the feel of a true island escape.

Chef/Owner loannis "Yiannis” Chatiris should know. He was born in Greece’s South Agean Sea where he learned his craft at a young age and opened his first restaurant, called Rodos, at the age of 22. In 2010 he made New York City his home and opened several restaurants, including Ethos Gallery 51, Pathos Café, Mykonos Blue and as a co-owner of Kyma. His latest endeavor is Skorpios.

ANN DOWD TO STAR IN PARK AVENUE ARMORY’S ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
May 26, 2021, 6:31.12 pm ET
Details

Photo: Enemy of the People

The Park Avenue Armory has announced the fourth commissioned work in its Social Distance Hall series: the world premiere of Enemy of the People, written by Henrik Ibsen, conceived and directed by Robert Icke and starring Emmy award-winning actor Ann Dowd in all the roles. The production will run June 22-July 25.

The play centers on a small former manufacturing town that has been revitalized as a resort destination due to its natural hot springs. When a scientist, who is the sister of the town’s Mayor, finds that the water is contaminated and the baths must be shut down, a democratic society confronts, in public and in private, a complex ethical crisis. The audience, sitting in pods of friends or family, will be invited to vote at critical moments of the story – and the majority vote will determine the play’s direction at each juncture.

Dowd received an Emmy Award for her work as Aunt Lydia on “The Handmaid’s Tale” and received an Emmy nomination for her work on “The Leftovers.” Her New York stage credits include “The Seagull,” “Taking Sides,” “Candida” and “Night Is a Room.”

Details

Photo: South Street Seaport Museum

The South Street Seaport Museum is offering a free outdoor exhibition this summer on Pier 16, which will provide the opportunity to discover this chapter of New York City’s history. This series of panels and window graphics will celebrate the people of all backgrounds who lived and worked in the South Street Seaport Historic District, and the many businesses that created the foundations for New York to thrive and become the business and culture mecca it is today. Using historic photographs, prints, lithographs, and paintings, the exhibition highlights some of the Seaport Museum’s collection of more than 28,000 artifacts and works of art, and over 55,000 historic records.

In addition, the museum will open the 1885 tall ship Wavertree to the public beginning Saturday, May 29 and running on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 21, with timed entry, from 11am-5pm at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). Entry is free and includes access to the ship’s outdoor areas, including the main deck and raised rear deck.

Wavertree is designated on the National Register of Historic Places and represents the thousands of ships that docked along New York’s waterfront over the centuries. Guests who visit the traditional sailing ship docked at Pier 16 can gaze up at the towering masts and miles of rigging, earn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, and then visit the cargo hold and stand atop a new viewing platform where one can take in the massive main cargo area.

Visits will be self-guided along a set route. The Museum will allow no more than 150 guests on board the ship at any time to encourage social distancing from different households. All guests above the age of two will be required to wear a face covering and to sanitize their hands at all times aboard Wavertree and at the Museum’s pop-up gift shop.

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

We first encountered Gabriel Lamonaco back in February, who in the middle of a pandemic, was bartering his "unregular pizzas" with New Yorkers through his Instagram page. What made the pizza so special was the length of time it took to make the crust - 96 hours for the leavening process to be complete. What also made them stand out were the different flavor combinations.

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

Fast forward to today, and Lamonaco now has his first brick-and-mortar location near Union Square on 4th Avenue between 13th and 14th Street. A gleaming Lamonaco appears to be off to a booming start with a large crowd waiting to try his pies when we paid him a visit. And this is what they are coming for:

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

Delicatissima - Cherry tomato confit, mozzarella, pancetta, in a wine reduction sauce.

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

Burrapizza Pugliese - Broccoli rabe sauce, cherry tomato confit, whole burrata, sundried tomato sauce and orecchiette crunch.

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

Burrapizza Cofonata - Tomato Sauce, all natural pepperoni, house hot honey, whole burrata and nudja sauce.

NYC Bites - Unregular Pizza

Prochute - Prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, sundried tomato sauce and arugula.

Prices range from about $5 a slice up to $13 for more elaborate pies on the menu.

Bandits brings 70's kitsch to the Village

Bandits, a new watering hole from the team behind Den Hospitality (Borrachito and The Garret Bars), is opening on the corner of Bedford and Leroy (44 Bedford Street) in the former Daddy-O space. The restaurant and bar offers a modern take on an old school diner and dive with a nod to vintage New York. The decor incorporates 70’s elements like warm, yellow-frilled light boxes, traditional diner-style stools with a checkered floor to match, and inviting leather booths where guests can take in the room and the interesting people that fill it.

Bandits gets its name from Den Hospitality’s trademark raccoon mascot, Rocco, a nocturnal critter who’s seen as a lover of artisanal cocktails and memorable New York nights. Think of it as a welcoming saloon where guests can lose track of time.

Bandits brings 70's kitsch to the Village

When Bandits opens its doors on May 19th it will offer 32 seats inside and 30 outside, with food and drinks served until late. The all-day menu featured elevated all-American diner and deli-inspired classics like The Ripper (a New Jersey-style deep fried hot dog), Steak & Tots served with trois au poivre sauce & duck fat taters, and a Wedge Salad with slab maple bacon. A Chickpea “Tuna” Melt is available for veggie lovers featuring house chickpea salad and herby pesto vinaigrette served with a traditional pickle and chips, and Bandit Fried Cauliflower Wings with several sauce options.

Bandits brings 70's kitsch to the Village

The cocktail program pays tribute to prominent New York moments in pop culture. Look for drinks like the Bradshaw on Bedford (Lemon Juice, Rose Hips, Rhubarb, Sundried Tomato, Basil, Vodka), Jazz & TeeTea (Jasmine Tea Bourbon, Lilet Blanc, Benedictine, Punt e Mes, Peychaud bitters), and I Drink Your Milkshake (Cold Brew Vodka, Coffee Liqueur, Chocolate Liqueur, Five Spice Rice Milk, Pirouline Wafer Cookie). Frozen cocktails include Every Day Tiki-Every Day Vacay, a rotating special featuring tropical cocktails like a Mai Tai and Singapore Sling. The menu also includes a selection of dressed up beers – inspired by late night food carts and their signature sauces – featuring creative additions like hot sauce and seasonings.

Bandits is designed by Yakka Studios, with its playful decor draws inspiration from old-school 1970’s New York diners, combined with the comfort and familiarity of a quirky living room of the era. The interior features dark wooden paneling contrasted by timeless green marble, a plush, green carpeted wall (a nod to Elvis Presley’s first vacation home), yellow velvet lighting, and a disco ball-inspired ceiling of golden mirrored tiles.

BROADWAY IS BACK IN BUSINESS!

Photo: Cititour.com

More than 20 Broadway productions have already announced their intention to take their place on the Great White Way this fall, with other shows still expected to join the line-up. Tickets have also started to go on sale.

And while much of Broadway will be different – for example, theatergoers may need to wear masks, some shows will start with reduced playing schedules and final decisions on casting have yet to be made on most shows – the reality is that much will have stayed the same since the spring of 2020, when Broadway suddenly shut down due to the pandemic.

As expected, many long-running shows such as “Wicked,” “Chicago,” “The Lion King,” “Hamilton,” “Ain’t Too Proud,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Aladdin” and “Come from Awa” and Dear Evan Hansen (Dec) will return to their original theaters, some as soon as September 14.

In addition, two of the 2019-2020 Tony Award contenders for Best Musical, “Jagged Little Pill” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” will resume performances in October. (No word yet on the fate of the third nominee, “Moulin Rouge,” although star Karen Olivo has publicly announced she will not return to the show. And the season’s highest acclaimed (if non-Tony-eligible) musical, “David Byrne’s American Utopia,” will return to the Hudson Theatre for a limited engagement on September 17.

As was also expected, a number of shows that were in previews last March – or about to start them –- will also return: “Six,” “Caroline or Change,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Company” and “Flying Over Sunset.” (The latter, produced by Lincoln Center Theatre, has not posted an exact opening date,)

Meanwhile, theatergoers looking for completely new fare aren’t totally out of luck. “Diana: The Musical,” and “MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical,” will both begin performances in December, as will the heavily anticipated revival of “The Music Man,” starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster (although the decision by lead producer Scott Rudin to remove himself from the show could cause a complication.)

On the play front, the Roundabout will reopen its American Airlines Theatre in late October with the first Broadway production of Alice Childress’ 1955 play “Trouble In Mind”; Second Stage will begin its Broadway season at Hayes Theater in November with Pultizer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s latest work, “Clyde’s”; Manhattan Theatre Club will launch its season at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater with Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s autobiographical solo show “Lackawanna Blues” and Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s searing three-character drama, “Pass Over,” originally produced at LCT3 in 2018, will have a limited engagement at the August Wilson Theater (which was vacated by “Mean Girls” during the pandemic.”)

Keith Haring's refrigerator door is among items being auctioned off at Guernsey's on May 12
May 7, 2021, 6:23.47 pm ET
Details

A graffiti tagged refrigerator door, taxidermized mounted moose head and conceptual mixed-media works of art are among the items previously belonging to iconic artists Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Christo, that will be sold without reserve at Guernsey’s “Urban Gems” auction on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

During his rise to fame in the 1980s, Haring’s SoHo walk-up apartment became the hub of New York City’s art scene. Drenched in a wild array of Haring’s signature images and colors, it was the “place to be” for superstars, including Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna and more graffiti artists than could fill a subway car. Haring’s sign-in “guest register" was his refrigerator door.

The auction also includes Andy Warhol’s statuesque mounted moose head. Often pictured together, Warhol and the moose appeared prominently in a New York Times article in 2018. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the moose will go in support of the ASPCA.

Also, among the lots in Urban Gems is a rare 1933 Rolls Royce Shooting Brake (British for “Woodie.”) It is believed the car is one of only 50 ever created and fewer survive today. At the height of his career, Andy Warhol owned one and earlier in the century, King Edward VIII, later the Duke of Windsor, used his Rolls Royce Shooting Brake to secretly shuttle Wallis Simpson into Balmoral Castle during what proved to be the “love affair of the century."

Bidding opens at 3pm EST at Liveauctioneers.com, and Invaluable.com on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021 via online bids and over the phone at 212-794-2280.

Cuomo sets the stage for Broadway's reopening
Photo: Cititour.com

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says New York can now reopen on May 19th as COVID cases continue to drop dramatically. New York is easing restrictions signicantly along with New Jersey and Connecticut. The limit on outdoor social gatherings increases to 500 on May 10 in New York, while the indoor gathering limit will increase to 250. Limits on large-scale indoor venue capacity will climb to 30%. Large outdoor venues can increase capacity to 33%. Proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test will still be required.

Governor Cuomo saying, "Beginning Wednesday, May 19th, most capacity restrictions will end across the tri state area that includes retail stores, food services, gyms, fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops, offices, etcetera."

Broadway may also be allowed to reopen. "We're talking to Broadway," said Cuomo, "Broadway, for example, has a schedule. They have to produce a play before they can sell the play. So there's a schedule for them. But from a capacity point of view, they can all reopen on May 19th."

Six-foot distancing rules will still be enforced in the city, limiting capacity, which has been an issue for theaters. The Broadway League has said it anticipates a fall opening, although that could be moved up after the Governor's latest guidance. According to Broadway News, producers are looking for capacity limits to near 100% as they look to restore profitability.

Separately, the Governor says New York City subways will resume 24-hour service, beginning on May 17th.
