By Brian Scott Lipton

Word to the wise: Do not, under any circumstances, come with even one hunger pang to “Clyde’s,” Lynn Nottage’s devilishly funny new comedy, now being presented by Second Stage at Broadway’s Hayes Theater. I promise that the constant talk of amazing sandwiches – mouthwatering variations on grilled cheese, hamburgers and even turkey wraps -- will have you chewing off your fingers off if you’re not fully sated. Still, the only thing more delicious than these culinary creations is the work of the show’s five-person ensemble, all of whom benefit from Kate Whoriskey’s cheddar-sharp direction. Read Full Review

A worldwide shortage of white truffles, combined with global supply chain problems, is sending prices for the delicacies through the roof. Bloomberg has dubbed it “the Great White Truffle Crisis of 2021” with prices doubling, tripling and even quadrupling for suppliers. At Urbani Truffles, white alba truffles from small to large are sold out. Now, chefs at two New York City restaurants, American Bar and Peasant, are trying to save the season while keeping prices somewhat affordable.

At Chef Marc Forgione’s rustic restaurant Peasant (194 Elizabeth St), egg yolk raviolo is topped with freshly shaved white truffle. The dish is being featured for $69 with only 10 servings per night. The special is aimed at celebrating truffle season while keeping an approachable price point. The celebrity chef’s menu is an ode to simple rustic wood-fired Italian cooking focusing on seasonal, local, and thoughtfully sourced ingredients.

Photo: American Bar

At American Bar (33 Greenwich Ave), chef Carolina Santos-Neves is showcasing tagliatelle with truffle infused cremini mushrooms, parmesan, and shaved white truffles for $75. American Bar is the cult-favorite West Village restaurant from restaurateurs Kyle Hotchkiss Carone and Jeff Kadish of Grand Tour Hospitality, along with David Rabin. The restaurant is known for its modern and craveable American classics.

Now that’s something for truffle aficionados to cheer about!

To eat like a true Milanese, there are two must-haves - L’Ossobuco, an expertly braised veal shank from Sekel Farms served with saffron risotto and gremolata, and Cotoletta alla Milanese, a tender, breaded veal chop served bone-in and accompanied by dressed Italian chicories (top). The dish dates back to 1134, and after one bite you’ll understand its centuries-long appeal. For dessert, there’s Panettone di Bignè alla Nocciola, a cream puff filled with hazelnut Chantilly cream & caramel butter, and Cioccolato, chocolate sponge cake with hazelnut white chocolate crunch.

While Florence may have created the Negroni, it was perfected in Milan as an after-work apertivo. At Bar Milano, the cocktail is celebrated with Campari Tradizionale, a classic Negroni made with Piemonte Campari, Carpano Vermouth, Bulldog Gin and an orange twist. There is also a refreshing Luxardo Negroni Bianco, a white Negroni made with Luxardo Bitter Bianco and a Luxardo Cherry. The Negroni are served from a cocktail cart and mixed tableside. The wine list also gives a nod to Northern Italy with small producers within a 100-mile radius of Milan.

Bar Milano by Eataly is located at 200 5th Ave, New York, NY

Rib No. 7 Makes Ribs the Star
Photos: Cititour.com

In New York City there is one restaurant making the rib the star of the show. Rib No. 7 is a sprawling new restaurant in Koreatown where diners chow down on monster ribs cooked table-side with outstanding results.

Rib No. 7, Koreatown, NYC, Kimchi

The meal begins with traditional Banchan, a collection of small plates like colorful pickled radishes sliced paper thin, lively kimchi and crunchy cucumbers. Appetizers include a grilled short rib patty made with minced prime beef and vegetables, several types of Korean pancakes (some filled with seafood), steamed pork belly, and beef tartare topped Korean pear and raw egg yolk.

Rib No. 7, Koreatown, NYC, Pork Belly

But it’s the iconic ribs that provide the real allure. Only the largest and choice cuts are selected. Marinated dry-aged prime rib is cut off the bone tableside. The perfectly marbled beef is turned into bite-sized squares and cooked on a sizzling cast iron pan with vegetables and sprigs of fresh thyme. It's delicious. Also offered, “short cut” steak hand kneaded with special sauce that literally melts in your mouth, marinated boneless pork rib, thinly sliced brisket, and beef heart.

Rib No. 7, Koreatown, NYC, Bar

Also making an appearance - Army Casserole - a mix of spam, hot dogs and bacon served with kimchi and ramen. Grilled Chilean sea bass is available for non-meat eaters, along with silky tofu stew. For dessert, there's black sesame ice cream. Cocktails, beer, soju and Korean spirits are also available.

If you are into Korean BBQ, Rib No.7 is number one in our book!

Review: The Alchemist Is Guaranteed To Have You Smiling

The three con artists at the center of Ben Johnson’ 1810 play The Alchemist, now at New World Stages, absolutely cannot turn stone into gold, as they promise, but the expert actors who play them in Red Bull Theater’s jubilant production of the play can definitely deliver the comic goods. Indeed, the entire cast of Jeffrey Hatcher’s freewheeling and often anachronistic adaptation of this classic farce, directed with absolute assurance by Jesse Berger, is guaranteed to have you smiling – and even guffawing – at their ridiculous antics. The design is a nod to the restaurant’s waterfront location and features notes of blue-green and neutral wood throughout the space. A wall of windows overlooking the harbor flows into a custom, handmade jade tile installation from Glithero, which features brightly lit impressions of aquatic botanicals. Each table is outfitted with a personal tabletop grill and complemented by dark blue leather banquettes and green velvet chairs. Adjacent to the 36-seat dining room are two private karaoke rooms that also overlook the water. Each room comfortably seats up to ten guests.

In 2006, Chef David Chang opened Momofuku Ssäm Bar in the East Village, where it became a downtown New York staple for fifteen years. In fall 2021, after the restaurant’s lease expired in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Momofuku moved Ssäm Bar to Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport. Months after re-opening at South Street Seaport, Momofuku Ssäm Bar finishes setting down roots with the opening of Upstairs at Ssäm Bar, complete with a new menu developed by Momofuku Culinary Director Max Ng and Executive Chef Kris Brumsted.

Ssäm Bar reservations are available on Resy. For karaoke reservations, please fill out this form, email events@momofuku.com, or inquire night-of.

International restaurateur Alexander Orlov, founder of Bulldozer Group, has joined with American Standard Hospitality Group decided to create the new restaurant Osteria La Baia (152 West 52nd Street), which is inspired by the glittering coast of Italy and its discreet seaside towns.

Here, the award-winning designers of AvroKO have translated the warmth of Tuscany and an airy Mediterranean feel to this cosmopolitan locale, complete with a large marble bar clad in warm blonde wood with handsome blue-leather cushioned chairs, as well as individual tables for cocktailing and snacking.

The dining room is sectioned into two areas with sea blue banquettes, while beautifully appointed tables draped in linen are accompanied by custom-made club chairs. In addition, evocative pictures by famed American photographer Slim Aarons hang on one wall. There is also a private dining room, anchored by a dramatic skylight with retractable glass doors for flexibility, along with a custom-made painting by artist Bradley Wood.

The restaurant boasts an open kitchen with a wood-burning oven that turns out some of the restaurant’s signature specialties. Menu highlights include Sicilian Steak Tartare with Artichoke Aioli, Wood Grilled Octopus, Whole Red Snapper Crudo, Pizze with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Comte Cheese, Red Onion and Spicy Honey, Lemon Ricotta Agnolotti, Lobster Garganelli ‘Calabrese’ with Calabrian Chili, Pan-Seared Skate with ’Nduja Caper Cream Sauce, Rabbit alla Cacciatora, and Dover Sole Saltimbocca (fileted tableside and topped with Prosciutto).

Desserts complete the journey with fluffy Zeppole, a luscious Budino, and Panna Cotta topped with balsamic vinegar. In addition, La Baia has an impressive wine list featuring over 100 bottles from Italy, France and the US, as well as such popular cocktails as Negronis and Spritzes.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC, Lines
Photos: Cititour.com

There aren’t too many places we’d wait outside on a cold, blustery day for a sandwich, but All’Antico Vinaio, the famous sandwich shop from the Mazzanti family in Florence, Italy, is one of them. The square sandwiches served on freshly baked Tuscan style schiacciata bread are enormous and filled with the freshest of ingredients.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC

All’Antico, you may recall, emerged as a pop-up a few years back at Otto’s in Greenwich Village. It instantly drew a long line of fans.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC, Lines

The lines have returned, only this time it is a permanent location. During our visit the line extended half way down the block along 8th Avenue near 46th Street. Inside the small shop, with limited counter space for standing, the line curled around the open-air kitchen where two workers, including one with a thick Italian accent, prepared the sandwiches and sliced the fabulous prosciutto found in several of them.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC, The Boss

One of the signature sandwiches is the La Schiacciata Del Boss, or simply,”The Boss.” It is filled with thinly sliced Prosciutto Toscano, thick slices of Pecorino Toscano and a layer of truffle cream. It’s an amazing combination.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC, Porchetaa

Equally as amazing is La Summer, a monster of a sandwich filled with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil and extra virgin olive oil. We swapped out the prosciutto for house made porchetta which is out of this world. Vegetarian options include La Caprese made simply with mozzarella, tomato and basil.

All'Antico Vinaio, Sandwiches, Midtown, NYC, Porchetaa

We counted nine different sandwiches ranging in price from $9 to $19. One of the workers gave us a thumbs up as we waited on line. But they are the ones that deserve two thumbs up! Bravo!

Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan Renamed for Ivan Reitman

Details

Photo: Alamo Drafthouse

The new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Lower Manhattan theater at 28 Fulton Street will carry an alternate name, the Ivan Reitman Cinema, in honor of the legendary filmmaker behind such films as “Ghostbusters” and “Stripes.”

A plaque can now be found at the complex that reads in part “Director Ivan Reitman has entertained and influenced generations of film lovers with seminal films like STRIPES, MEATBALLS, and DAVE. In GHOSTBUSTERS, he made hilariously wild concepts feel grounded, and cemented his entire cast – including a 112-foot-tall marshmallow man – into New York icons. Because of his incalculable influence on cinema, this Alamo Drafthouse Cinema shall hereby and forevermore be known as the Ivan Reitman Cinema.”

The re-naming of the cinema was held at a ceremony on November 15, attended by Reitman, which was held beneath the gaze of a massive, nearly 12-foot-tall statue of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, one of the key characters in “Ghostbusters,” complete with gothic columns and terror dog gargoyles.

Beginning Friday, November 19th, the theater will begin showing “Ghostbusters Afterlife,” a sequel to the hit 1984 film, produced by Reitman and directed by his son Jason. All attendees at showings of the film will enjoy a free letterpress postcard from the theater’s bar/museum, The Press Room, featuring original promotional art; a “Ghostbusters”-themed drink menu, featuring an “Ectoplasmic Residue” cocktail and “Ecto-Cooler” juice; and a custom pre-show featuring a kaleidoscope of nostalgia-inducing pop ephemera that fans of the original film will appreciate.

Given the increasingly political divisions engulfing this country, should one really encourage a production of John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking 1990 musical “Assassins” -- a darkly comic vaudeville about the men and women who killed (or try to kill) the president of the United States? As John Doyle’s simply staged and brilliantly cast production at Classic Stage Company proves, the answer is a definite yes. Read Full Review

Review: Girl From The North Country is Hauntingly Beautiful
Photo: Matthew Muphy

By Brian Scott Lipton

The world is full of natural, if not altogether obvious, matches. (Think chocolate and peanut butter, perhaps.) Now, add to that list the great Irish playwright Conor McPherson and the singular American songwriter (and Nobel laureate) Bob Dylan. Their seemingly disparate sensibilities have come together to create one of the most haunting – and hauntingly beautiful -- musicals I’ve ever seen, “Girl from the North Country,” which has arrived at Broadway’s Belasco Theater after a multi-year journey from the UK and NYC’s Public Theater (where it earned the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical). Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down in Elkton, MD 2021
Photos: Tishman Speyer

A 79 foot Norway spruce weighing some 12 tons will arrive at Rockefeller Center on Saturday, December 13th. The tree, which is 46 feet wide and approximately 85 to 90 years old, was donated by the Price family from Elkton, Maryland. Here’s a bit of the backstory.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down in Elkton, MD 2021

When Devon and Julie Price heard a knock at their door, they assumed it was someone looking to repave their driveway. As Devon led their mystery guest around the property to show the visitor their Norway Spruces, as requested, it became clear that their biggest tree might be destined for greatness.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down in Elkton, MD 2021

Their mystery visitor, Erik Pauze, happens to be the Head Gardner at Rockefeller Center. He had spotted it from afar when driving around the area earlier this year in his perpetual search for the perfect tree candidate.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down in Elkton, MD 2021

As Devon continued to talk with Erik, he quickly realized they had an amazing opportunity at hand, and now, their tree will become this year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, the very first time a tree from Maryland has been selected. “We never considered that our tree would be the one on display for the world to see at Rockefeller Center,” Devon shared. “It truly is quite the honor.”

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Cut Down in Elkton, MD 2021

High school sweethearts Devon and Julie moved to Elkton, Maryland 30 years ago, and have lived in the same house ever since. He’s a former United States Navy officer. She’s a retired school secretary. They own a few acres of land right on the Delaware-Pennsylvania-Maryland border, overflowing with the strong, sturdy Norway Spruce trees that have become synonymous with the Christmas season.

The Price’s tree will be adorned with more than 50,000 multi-colored lights and topped with a 900-pound, three-dimensional Swarovski star featuring 70 spikes covered in 3 million crystals. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 1 from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Once the holidays pass, the tree will be milled and donated to Habitat for Humanity where it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come as part of someone's home.

Jungsik, a contemporary Korean restaurant, led by newly appointed Executive Chef Daeik Kim, is unveiling its new five-course seasonal menu, the first under Kim. Known for its inventive New Korean cuisine, Jungsik also likes to add a bit of whimsy to its dishes.

The new five-course menu begins with Squid stuffed with squid ink risotto and served with a dashima beurre blanc sauce. The dish is topped with smoked trout roe in a tribute to the Oh-Jing-Uh, a spicy squid stir-fry found in the coastal regions of Korea.

Diners will also discover Bossom Bibimbap, an elevated rendition of a Korean pork belly dish cooked confit-style over Dwaengjang rice with onion jiangaji and chiffonade of wild sesame, garnished with purple shiso.

Black Cod and Squab also make an appearance. The squab is dry aged for three days, oven roasted and finished over a charcoal fire. It's served in a squab jus made with a traditional Korean wine, Bokbunja, in homage to the Korean dish Tteok-galbi.

The meal ends with Executive Pastry Chef Yoonjung Oh’s Charcoal and Corn, a grilled corn dessert with grilled corn ice cream and a brown butter crumble. Its plating evokes memories of a bonfire, with charcoal pieces lying on the left and ice cream on the right.

The Seasonal Menu is priced at $165 with the option for a wine pairing for an additional $110 or a premium wine pairing for $300.

Ice Skating returns to Rockefeller Center on November 6 ahead of the star-studded Christmas Tree lighting set for Wednesday, December 13th.

In the meantime, fans of Chanel No. 5 will want to check out a new display honoring Chanel perfumes dating back to 1921.

Bryant Park is getting into the holiday spirit with ice skating, The Lodge, cozy igloos and its holiday shops. This year’s food vendors include Frida’s Favorites, Crepe Café, S’mores N’more and the Winter Pie Shop which is delightful.

At Macy’s, the holiday decorations are already going up ahead of the big return of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with fans lining the parade route and new balloons, including an appearance by Baby Yoda.

FAO Schwarz is decking the halls with huge stuffed animals, and lots of fun and unique toys, including the FAO Mercedes bedazzled with Swarovski crystals selling for $14,995 for the kid who has everything, and that's a markdown.

Until next time, we’ll see you Around Town!

Review: David Hyde Pierce Lands in The Visitor

It’s tempting to call the new musical “The Visitor,” now at the Public Theater, well-intentioned – but it’s a bit of puzzlement what its intentions are. On one hand, the show wants to be about the spiritual and political awakening of Walter, a morose middle-aged college professor, played with sincerity and pathos by the always welcome David Hyde Pierce. On the other hand, it’s determined to alert us to America’s policy on deporting and detaining undocumented immigrants, which the show’s creators clearly see as cruel and unfair. Both seem like reasonable bases for an involving show. Read Full Review

Italian wines and small plates are in focus at One19 Wine Bar + Food on the Lower East Side. Industry veterans Chef/Co-owner Matt Rojas (Rouge et Blanc, Eleven Madison Park) and Sommelier Gianni Cavicchi (Nice Matin), are offering an approachable and affordable destination with a speakeasy feel where visitors are encouraged to explore lesser known grapes. In fact, you won’t find a Chardonnay or Merlot in the bunch.

One19 Wine Bar + Food, Speakeasy, LES, NYC

What you will find are virtually unknown and ancient varieties of wines from Italy, like Albana from Emilia-Romagna, Trebbiano Spoletino from Spoleto in Umbria, Forastera and Biancolella from the island of Ischia, Nerello Mascalese from Sicily, Schiava from Trentino-Alto Adige and more. The “Freshest Flight in the City” features 4 wines on tap including three from the organically farming Emilia-Romagna producer Tre Monti: Frizzante (Pignoletto), Orange (Albana) and Rubicone (Sangiovese), along with Finger Lakes’ Traminette from Rooftop Reds - the only non-Italian producer on the wine list. Guests can scan a QR code on the table for detailed information about each of the wines. A wine-on-tap program, meanwhile, is aimed at making it environmentally-friendly.
