CitiEats - We test Shake Shack's experimental lettuce-wrapped veggie burger
January 28, 2020, 12:07.45 am ET
Details

Is the Shake Shack Veggie Burger in a lettuce wrap the next big thing? We eat, you decide!

If you’ve ever been to Shake Shack’s Innovation Kitchen in the West Village you can get a jumpstart on what might just be the “next big thing” like its new Veggie Burger. Unlike other chains relying on Beyond Meat or Impossible Burgers that mimic the flavor of beef, Shake Shack’s Veggie Burger is more old school. It's packed with things like kale, quinoa, sweet potato and green beans. It is topped with cheese, tomato and a Russian-style dressing nestled between several layers of lettuce leaves. We rate our experience on a scale of one to ten with “ten” being the highest. But please feel free to let us know what you think.

APPEARANCE [7] -It doesn't get veggier than this. But there might be too much lettuce. You almost need a weed wacker to get to the burger.

FLAVOR [4] - Aside from the sauce, it's a little bland. Think of it as a "hippy" burger from the 70s that you might be trying to forget. Just add some sprouts. They could pick up some pointers from Superiority Burger.

PRICE [6] - I'm notoriously cheap. But spending more than seven bucks seems a bit steep for a burger that doesn’t really grab you or fill you up.

HEALTHINESS [8] - This burger is a godsend for folks trying to cut down on carbs, but it’s still not 100 percent there yet.

BURGER BUZZ [2] - True burger lovers won’t be sold. It’s a tad difficult to maneuver (WARNING: slippery when wet). And don’t even think about piling on the ketchup. It will come out through the seams or in this case the lettuce leaves.

EFFORT [10] - On the right path. Just not there yet!

And if that’s not enough you can take a dip in the heated pool.
