Cititour Review:

Zio Toto just got bigger.  The popular Italian spot in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn moving into a larger space on the corner of 83rd Street and 3rd Avenue.  It's also offering it's own baked goods and homemade Italian bread.  The space still maintains a rustic charm, but gone is the wood-burning oven from the dining room.

On my latest  visit we enjoyed a nice batch of crispy calamari with a splash of lemon ($10), along with a big bowl of fresh clams and mussels cooked in a red sauce ($15).

Zio Toto is also known for its pizzas ranging from a classic margherita ($10) to Pizza del Oste with sweet Italian sausage and mushrooms ($15).  We tried the Pizza Italia.  It is loaded up with large artichoke pieces, cherry tomatoes, pesto and gorgonzola ($15) and could easily serve as a meal for two.  But then you might miss a special of risotto topped with grilled shrimps ($23) and sliced asparagus, or the chicken parm ($17) featuring a huge breaded cutlet cooked perfectly on a plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce.

Other standouts include Veal Saloppini in a light garlic sauce ($18), veal saltibocca with sage and prosciutto ($18) and a personal favorite, Costadella di Maiale; two oversized pork chops in a wonderful barolo sauce ($18) served with mashed potatoes.

Desserts include your traditional Italian cheescake, tiramisu and chocolate mouse.  There are also fresh cannolis made to order.   But the show-stopper is a sweet foccacia bread cooked up in the brick oven and then slathered with nutella, fresh strawberries and a scoop of ice cream ($14).

Zio Toto is owned by brothers Fillipo and Giuseppe Giuffre who have brought their love of Italy, in particular Sicily, to Brooklyn and it shows.
