Cititour Review:

Enough people have obviously thought that Yum Yum, the homey Thai restaurant on Ninth Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets, has lived up to its name. So another branch has opened up a few doors north. And like its predecessor, Yum Yum 3 offers an appealing menu, fast and friendly service, and extremely modest prices, all within steps of the theater district. The menu is mostly Thai, with one page devoted to “A Taste of Vietnam,” and so my pal Diane and I decided to devote our dining experience equally to each cuisine. On the Vietnamese side, we began with three tiny but flavorful spring rolls, filled with both ground pork and ground shrimp, served alongside a small mound of surprisingly good Asian cole slaw. We followed that up with sweet and sour chicken, which unlike the Chinese version, isn’t deep fried; instead pieces of unbreaded poultry and vegetables share the plate, doused in a slightly too-sweet sauce. Our more traditional Thai selections included a quartet of nicely delicate steamed dumplings with a hearty filling of shrimp, chicken, herbs and water chestnuts, and that ubiquitous noodle dish, pad thai. The version here was darker than usual, but quite tasty and generously portioned with shrimp. Nothing here was particularly spicy, so next visit, I might try one of the many curry dishes, which are found on both the Thai and Vietnamese sides of the menu, to turn up the heat. If you’re looking for something sweet, you can forego a traditional dessert and order Thai iced tea or Thai iced coffee; I promise they will the do the trick.
