White Bear wins zero points for ambiance and atmosphere (three tables in a tiny storefront that is hardly bigger than your average NYC kitchen); zero points for service (gruff but serviceable; the chef has been kind enough to point out a few times when I've mistakenly tried to order the wrong thing); but all of the points are won by one thing alone: the Sichuan wontons. Which is good, because that is the only reason to come here; this one dish stands heads and tails above all other versions around the city. The thinnest of wonton skins that breaks gently away when you bite into them, yielding to a juicy pork nugget within that bursts forth with its heady pork essence; the pickled greens on top give it a slight sour tang to add depth, while the chili oil - which looks far hotter than it actually is (unless you drink it) gives it a lift of heat towards the end that rounds out the whole bite. Each bite brings nothing but pleasure to your mouth, leaving you wanting more, eating more, until the container in front of you is empty. No fear, though; 12 of these beauties will set you back $4.50 (cash only, please!), hardly a concern on your monthly wonton budget.
