Thai comfort foods in a stylish setting is what you will find at Wayla on the Lower East Side. Partners Erika Chou (Yunnan Kitchen, Northern Tiger) and chef Tom Naumsuwan (Spicy Shallot) have teamed up, along with beverage director Anthony Baker (The Aviary) to create a space inspired by Thai street markets, including a backyard with lush greenery and string lights. The menu brings dishes like Sai Oua, housemade pork sausage with makrut and fried chiles; Peek Gai Tod Numpla, plum sauce marinated fried chicken wings and toasted rice; Som Tum Thai, papaya salad with dried shrimp, peanuts, lime and crushed chiles; Gai Yang, Isan-style grilled chicken, mixed greens and nam jim jeaw; and Khor Moo Yang, marinated pork jowl with tamarind sauce. Cocktails include The Land of Smiles with tequila, Thai chili, tamarind, cucumber, lemon and sea salt flakes; Golden Cassia with rye, chrysanthemum, demerara, ginger, and club soda; and Waking up In Kodawari with mezcal, Cynar, Kodawari coffee and bitters.
