Walk past Vanessa's Dumpling House and you will most-likely find a line right out the door. The place always seemed to be packed with students and young people looking for some cheap eats as the open air kitchen pumps out piles of dumplings and other tasty treats.
And your buck goes pretty far here. A plate full of eight piping hot pork dumplings will set you back just $2.50. Add 50 cents and they'll arrive swimming in a bowl of soup. If you're looking to spend a bit more, there are chicken and basil dumplings($3 for 8) and shrimp dumplings ($4 for 8). My personal favorite are the steamed pork and chive dumplings. But you can also get them fried.
Aside from dumplings you'll also find steamed pork buns, and pancakes stuffed with chive and egg. Another favorite are the sesame pancake sandwiches that can be filled with everything from Peking duck ($2.25) to roast beef ($2), or carrots, cucumber and cilantro for a buck fifty. All are large enough for a small meal or a hearty lunch.
The menu also offers a nice selection of soups like shrimp and pork wonton, fish ball or Peking duck noodle. Flavored teas (black or green), and smoothies are also available. No matter how you slice it Vanessa's is a steal and worth a wait on that line. if possible, try to save a seat first.
