On a quiet strip of 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, not known for restaurants, one has cropped up that you should know about. It's called The Woodburning Pit and its specialty is Portuguese BBQ.
The space is filled with earthy tones, sturdy wooden chairs and tables, and some Portuguese art, including the restaurant's mascot, a ceramic chicken which oversees the open kitchen. The centerpiece -- a real wood-burning barbecue pit. And what emerges from it is simply delicious!
Our T-Bone Steak ($14) filled an entire plate. It arrived with a nice smoky char and perfectly rare on the inside. It's served with garlicy safron rice and crispy fries, and could easily feed two people. The Beef Short Ribs ($14) were also nice and juicy, while the pork ribs ($8/$14) were as tender as could be, with the meat falling away from the bone. Portguese sausage ($8) had a nice smoky flavor, while the rotisserie chicken packs a bit of heat that builds up as you go along.
There's also Shrimp in Garlic Sauce available an appetizer or meal, as well as salmon, and something called Picadinho con Camarones ($9/$15); cubes of pork served with baby shrimp. Desserts include a traditional flan, rice pudding and cheesecake. Sangria and beer are on the way, but right now its BYOB.
We found the owners to be very gracious hosts and they certainly know how to fire up a grill that we're sure will earn them much success!
