Cititour Review:

There are plenty of places to find a good burger in New York City, but nothing quite compares to the one Chef April Bloomfield is cooking up in her open-air kitchen at Salvation Burger on East 51st Street.  We were lucky to grab a spot at the counter where you can take in all of the action.  Bloomfield, of Spotted Pig fame, is hands on, doing everything from slicing onions and stirring the chili to tasting the popcorn.  Everything that leaves the kitchen is given the once over and in most cases, tasted.

The burgers are all cooked up on a charcoal grill.  The coals coming from a blazing wood-fired oven nearby, where everything from sizzling bone marrow to wood-roasted oysters are made to order.  Huge trays of burger buns, fresh from the oven, glisten with toasted sesame seeds.

The signature "Salvation Burger" is an inch thick behemoth with juices pouring down the center.  It's topped with roasted hen of the woods mushrooms and smoked blue cheese.  The result is salty, tangy and oh so tasty.  At $25, it's worth every bite.  The gentleman sitting next to me from Malaysia bought the "Classic" burger, two thin patties with housemade cheese, special sauce and pickle slices, but lamented not getting the thicker burger for a few extra bucks.  Fries, which arrive in small buckets, are crispy and plentiful. There is also a veggy burger with carrot, tomato and Garam Marsala.  Hot dogs, salads, including one with romaine, roasted garlic, anchovy and Parmesan are offered along with wood-grilled shrimp.

Cap off your meal with an oversized slice of banana cream pie topped with "banana glass."   There's also bourbon pecan and coconut cream pie.  Creative cocktails, wine and craft beers are also available.

The quality of ingredients, skill and friendly service make Salvation Buger a destination, but get there early.   We went on a rainy early Wednesday evening and the place was packed.   Try to score a seat at the counter.  You'll be glad you did.
