File this one under, "kids will eat anywhere." In what looks like an office overlooking a parking garage is the dining room for Num Pang, a popular shop serving Cambodian-style banh mi sandwiches.
To get there you will need to squeeze past the kitchen, which is about the size of a large closet, and climb up the spiral staircase. Once there you can grab a seat and wait for your number to be called. Space is limited with just a few seats facing graffiti-scarred windows and those are the good ones. Draw the short straw and you'll find yourself sitting on kindergarten stools next to a noisy air vent. It is one of the grittiest New York spaces I've seen in a long time and I must say I loved it!
I also loved my sandwich, fried peppercorn catfish topped with shredded carrots, thin slices of crispy cucumber and lots of cilantro. The spicy sauce is also killer. And as usual It was gone in a flash.
