Num Pang's newest location, called Nomad, is certainly living up to the name. It looks as if they just walked in and set up shop. An aging tile floor is scuffed up with large patches of cement. Ditto for the scarred tile walls. A room jutting off the kitchen is covered with graffiti while the main dining area is surrounded by a waist-high brick wall resembling a moat (minus the alligators). So much for first impressions. But all is forgiven with the very first bite.
Num Pang’s Cambodian sandwiches are well worth the trip. The Coconut Tiger Shrimp ($8.75) sandwich offers the most tender shrimps I’ve ever tasted laced with toasted coconut flakes, shredded carrot, crisp paper thin slices of cucumber and bright green leaves of fragrant coriander. Add in a light sweet-and-sour sauce and each bite is a bit of heaven. I also tried the Pulled Duroc Pork ($8.25), a domestic American bred pig known for its clean, crisp taste. The pork is piled on thick with a spicy honey sauce that builds as you eat it without ever overtaking the flavor of the meat. Other sandwiches, which are all served on a crispy baguette, include hoisin meatballs, peppercorn catfish and grilled hanger steak. There are also seasonal offerings like five-spice glazed pork belly with pickled Asian pear and oven roasted turkey with a spiced cranberry-apple chutney. Vegetarian options include spicy organic tofu and grilled Portobello mushrooms.
Unlike other Num Pang locations, this spot is also offering up noodle and rice dishes, along with blood orange lemonade and green jasmine iced tea.
