Cititour Review:

All of the sudden Japanese is becoming the glitterati of the food world.  Restaurants like Fushimi and Kiku have created not just a dining experience, but an experience, filled with psychedelic colors, giant buddhas, and over-sized photos of beautiful women.
Enter NGi in Brooklyn which describes itself as next-generation Japanese fusion.  Run by Simon Ng, a former alum at Fushimi, the space boasts lacquered walls, an illuminated blue tile bar, and strings of sparkling silver beads separating the booths that give the place a bit of a disco feel.

Simon is the key here. Dressed in a white, v-neck t-shirt during our visit, he certainly knows his stuff and is extremely cool under pressure.  Think of him as the James Bond of sushi.  He's also knows how to make you feel very welcome.

The food at NGi is also more interesting than some of the traditional sushi joints in the area, and goes well beyond just sushi.  There is a French crab bisque ($7) and warm duck salad ($8).  There is also something called "seafood pizza" ($10) which turned out to be a spicy mix of crab and lobster.  It is served with a dollop of guacamole atop a tortilla crisp and has a nice spicy kick to it.  The restaurant is also making crab cakes with spicy mango mayo ($9) and deep fried tuna raviolis ($8).  Bite-size shrimp dumplings ($5) are plump and juicy served with a ginger ponzu sauce. You might need two orders.  Ours were gone in a flash.

Entrees include char-grilled filet mignon ($24), oven roasted sea bass with XO sauce ($24) and lobster tail teriyaki ($18).  We sampled some of the house rolls.  The crispy soft shell crab, shrimp tempura and California rolls were all spot on.  The Ace roll, made with king crab and shrimp, is lightly fried giving it some added crunch.

NGi also has a full bar with sexy white stools, perfect for sipping one of their lychee or chocolate martinis.  Beer and wine, and a nice selection of sake is also available.
