Cititour Review:

In the space that once occupied Meriken stands a new Japanese restaurant called Momoya. Large doors roll up to create an open, airy space during the warmer months. The restaurant itself has undergone a massive rehab. It now has a beautiful marble sushi bar. We were equally impressed with the wall coverings - wooden blocks, in different shapes and sizes, stacked on top of each other to give the impression of a brick wall. The wood complete with cracks and flaws creates a natural, woodsy feel. It's actually quite mesmerizing if you look closely at it. It's that willingness to experiment that also shows up in Momoya's food. We began our meal with a bowl of mushroom soup, an earthy broth with a parade shitake, enoki and button mushrooms floating on top ($4). It was as beautiful as it was tasty. The sushi bar offers the standard fare, but we'd recommend going for some of the specials. A lobster roll ($14) comes wrapped in a green soy paper. Fresh lobster accompanied by avacado, asparagus and red tipped lettuce. A spicy salsa gives this dish an added kick, although the salsa could use a bit more heat. A snow crab roll ($8.50) also shows inventiveness. Instead of the traditional seaweed, this roll comes wrapped in a transparent soy paper. Bits of red pepper give it both flavor and a dash of color. Other items on the menu include a sardine tempura salad ($8) and lobster spring rolls in a citrus vinaigrette ($7). The most refreshing thing about Momoya is its willingness to take risks. Risks that appear to be paying off.
