Cititour Review:

Milan's is an old world restaurant located in the changing South Slope / Sunset Park part of Brooklyn. Specializing in Slovak and Czech food, it's central European comfort food at its best. Operating for 16 years their customer base is a mix of Slovak, Czech, Pols, Ukranians, Russians and, well, Americans. It's run by a couple, Milan Franko and his wife Flavka, a professional chef who largely operates the kitchen.

Walking in the door it feels like a Mom and Pop business. Each table has a checkered tablecloth and it's extremely clean. The walls feature pictures of Slovak hockey players and celebrities. The restaurant has two sides, one for large parties and the other with regular tabletops. On tap are several Czech beers including Kruscovice and Staropramen. Everything is made in house from the dumplings to the pasta to the fresh soups. There are some familiar items on the menu such as potato pancakes, pierogs and kielbasy.

Slovak food, like Polish food, is meat and potatoes centric. Milan's recommendation was the popular item Belehradsky Bravcovy Rezen. It's a hearty plate of two pork chops coated in potato batter cooked to a golden brown. Accompanying this are a crisp coleslaw, cabbage salad infused with beets and potatoes. Everything tasted fresh. The only criticism is that the potatoes were a little underseasoned. It was a hearty, filling meal for only $12 not including a couple of Kruscovice beers ($5/each). This is soul food by way of Central Europe.
