Michael "Bao" Huynh, who already operates five Vietnamese restaurants, is ringing in the New Year with a burger joint.  Mikey's on the Lower East Side opened on New Year's eve and already is becoming a neighborhood favorite. 

For now, the restaurant is offering five burgers; Mikey's Corned Beef with  onion and pickled mustard seed ($5.50), the BLT Chinese Bacon Kewpie with mayo, lettuce and tomato ($6), a Lamb Satay Style with jalapeno mint, and a regular burger ($5/$5.50 with cheese).

I  went for the corned beef burger expecting to get something that resembled a sloppy Joe.  What arrived was a perfectly cooked burger (well done, but still plenty juicy) with a tangle of fried onions with bits of corned beef mixed in.  It was excellent!  I know because it was finished in no time flat.  As were the fries, hand-cut and nice a crispy. 

Mikey's is also serving up spicey chili ($4) and chili cheese fries ($6.75).  There are Boylan sodas, and Mash, with shakes on the way.

The only thing they could have done a bit better is the back room.  The tables are too high for the seating, but who cares with burgers this good!
