Martina in the East Village is already packing in the crowds. The pizzeria where pies are ordered at the counter, and a flashing red pager announces its arrival, is Danny Meyer's latest fast-casual entrant and possibly a new Shake Shack in the making. Instead of burgers it is small 4-slice pizzas being made at lightning speeds. They range from a traditional Margherita to the Salsiccia (with sausage and mushrooms), and Capracciosa (with artichoke, ham, mushrooms, olives and egg). The pies have an ultra-thin crust that still manages to stand up to the weight of the toppings. Side dishes include Croquettes stuffed with whipped potatoes and chives with a crunchy topping, and chicken meatballs in tomato sauce. Fresh garden salads are also offered along with soft serve ice cream, and affogato, for dessert. Champagne and wine is available by the glass or bottle. Credit cards only!
