Cititour Review:

Maison Ladurée, the luxury Parisian bakery that makes world famous macarons has had a house in the Upper Eastside of Manhattan for a couple of years now and in November 2013 they will open another location on West Broadway in SoHo.  Since macarons became all the rage a few years back I haven’t had a chance to check this place out, so I finally decided to venture uptown and see what all the fuss was about.  I got there about 6pm on a Saturday.  This part of Madison Avenue is pretty quiet at this time day, but not here, of course there was a line.

While you wait someone passes out a little menu with all of the flavors to choose from so by the time you get up to the counter the expectation is that you know what you want.  Having heard that the salted caramel was one of their best I thought I would give it a try.  The sales person suggested I also try the vanilla macaron to go along with the caramel, but I opted for the limone instead.  Honestly, at $2.80 a piece and the size of an Oreo cookie I wasn’t even sure I wanted another one, but my curiosity won out.

The macarons were good, very good.  In fact, when you put them into your mouth there’s this fizzing sensation.  Then, once you bite into them you get a few seconds of gooey chewiness on the outside before a burst of flavor emerges from the light and airy inside.  I liked the salted caramel, but I thought the limone was better.  It was sort of like an explosion of lemon mousse in my mouth.  And then they were gone.  Two cookies.  Six bucks.  Thirty seconds.

Were they worth it?  I know they fly them in from Paris daily and in this city it’s always nice to say you tried something once, but next time I’ll stick to a $3.00 package of Oreos from my local Duane Reade.
