Cititour Review:

I took the bait and entered Live Bait after walking past the joint for years. The place is located directly across from Madison Square Park along 23rd Street. It has the look and feel of a fish shack, including trophy fish that look like they were retreived from some fisherman's basement. The bar is really where the action is. It's always packed and buzzing which raises the decibal level quite a bit for the diners in the rear. For diners, the first thing I'd recommend is avoiding the booths, especially if you're being seated next to a lively bunch. You will feel every push, shove and squirm. Choose the regular table seating in the center. The best I can say about the food is it is affordable. A spare rib dinner will set you back $15, while the spit chicken will run you $12. Don't expect Daisy May's or R.U.B. quality barbecue and you won't be disappointed. We found it to be rather bland. But the beer is good and flowing and the more you drink the better the ribs might taste. I found myself clinging to the Hush puppies served with a jalepeno tartar sauce. There are also several seafood offerings including blackened catfish, crab cakes and seafood jambalaya. I'd recommend, at least in the warmer months, dining on some fabulous burgers at the Shake Shack across the street and then head over to Live Bait for some drinks with friends.
