House of Lasagna in Murray Hill has a BIG, BOLD signs urging people to come in and taste it. So we did. Take three steps down and you are in this quaint Italian restaurant with its wooden floors and white tableclothes. The kind of place were you can feel comfortable sipping a nice glass of wine or one of their "all night" martinis and cosmopolitans with cost six bucks. The menu prices are just as reasonable.
Dinner begins with a fresh Italian bread and small bowl of olive tapenade to slather on it. It's good. But, if you're not careful it's easy to fill up on it. Next up is a house salad of mixed greens, carrot and tomato with a balsalmic vinaigrette. But the pièce de résistance is the lasagna. Would it live up to all the hype?
There are about a half dozen varieties to choose from; Lasagna Nolognese (the house favorite) with fresh pasta layers with Bolognese Sauce, parmiggiano & béchamel; Lasagna Napoletana with slices of sausage, meatball and ricotta; and Lasagna di Spinaci with spinach, parmiggiano & a light béchamel. They also make a "Lasagna of the Day," made with seasonal market ingredients. Most are in the $14- to $15 range.
We tried the Lasagna Piemontese. It's about two inches wide covering the length of the plate and about two inches high. The pasta, which was not over-cooked, is layered with wild mushrooms and caramelized onions, ground short ribs of beef, asiago cheese and béchamel surrounded by a puddle of marinara sauce. It was piping hot and flavorful, especially when you got a taste of the marinated mushrooms, meat and cheese all i one bite. A sprinkle of parmesan took it over the top.
House of Lasagna also sells more than just lasagna. There is spaghetti with homemade meatballs, penne with vodka sauce and oreccheiette with broccoli and mixed vegetables. Larger plates include chicken and eggplant parmiggiana, along with veal scaloppine. Desserts include Italian favorites like ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu.
House of Lasagna is worth a shot if your looking for a relaxing meal, polite service and comforting foods.
