It was only a matter of time before mega-personality Guy Fieri made his way to the only place where nobody turns an eye to a naked cowboy. Yes, it’s true: after opening seven restaurants in California, Mr. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives has finally made it to New York! Of course, Guy has chosen Times Square as the location for his new eatery, which is situated in the former New York Times building, just two steps from Times Square. Guy’s other restaurants – Johnny Garlic’s and Tex Wasabi’s – are both Californian chains; the former serves up Italian and American cuisine, while the latter has a heavier pan-Asian influence. While both chains have had relative success within their demographics, Guy chose a new brand to bring his name to the Big Apple. He’s teamed up with local Heartland Brewery (with a pub location just across the street from Guy’s new location) to create an American restaurant with a bit of New York flavor, though his wine list does remain California-heavy, with glasses starting at 9.50 and bottles ranging from 36 to 145 for a 2008 Alexander Valley Cabernet. Heartland brews five beers just for the restaurant, available on tap at 7.50 a pint, and there’s also a variety of cocktails, including three different margaritas. The Caliente Margarita (13) includes house-infused jalapeño tequila. The restaurant opened to the public at the beginning of September, boasting three floors, each with its own full bar, and more than 500 seats. The menu features a little bit of everything. Appetizers run the gambit from tacos – both Chipotle Barbecue (12.50) and Sashimi (14.50) versions are served --, to self-proclaimed “Awesome” Pretzel Chicken Tenders (11.50) and Guy’s very own Guy-Talian Nachos (12.95). Mains are separated into meal salads, sandwiches and burgers, and pasta, with another entrée list encompassing everything from Beer and Honey Porchetta (29.50) to a 10-ounce Steak Diane (31.50). Signature dishes, like Guy’s Big Bite Burger (13.95), served on a brioche bun slathered with garlic butter, are indicated on the menu. Signature desserts include Salted Whisky Caramel Fool (12). The moral of this story seems to be bigger is better. As the restaurant continues attracting customers intrigued by the buzzword-heavy menu, time will tell on the verdict! - Emily Monaco
