Cititour Review:

(Now at 348 Flatbush Ave)

It took us a while to finally get to Franny's after hearing review after review about just how good the pizza is. And right off the bat, I must say I'm sorry it took so long. The place was packed when we arrived at 6pm on a Saturday with a half hour wait for a the table. Making the wait easier though is the friendliness of the staff and the beer coming out of the tap (we sampled the Sweet Action at $6 a pint).  Franny's is the kind of place any neighborhood would want down the block. It's design is simple yet sheik. It's clientele young, but not pretentious, and youngins are not frowned upon, which makes it great for families. And the smells eminating from the wood-burning oven are enough to give anyone a healthy appetite. And that's what's best about Franny's - the eats.

We started with thin slices of Soppressata ($10), a dried sausage similar to salami (there's also a sample platter with Pancetta, Soppressata, Coppa and Mortadella), and potato croquettes ($9) that look like little meatballs smothered with grated cheese. They're served piping hot so watch out. The special appetizer this day were polenta fries ($7) dotted with fresh rosemary and served with shavings of parmesan cheese. It was heaven. As was the classic puntarelle salad ($12) made with chicory and an amazing citrus, walnut dressing.  All of this led up to the main event - the pizza. The first to arrive was a sausage pie ($18), nicely burned around the edges with gooey buffalo mozzarella and slices of homemade sausage. A second "white" pie ($13) was my favorite. It arrived with a bubbly crust, lots of melted mozzarella and thin slices of garlic, which I could have easily eaten myself (and next time I will). Also on the menu, a clam pie with chilies and parsley which we hope to try on our next visit. The pizza is served until 11:30pm on Saturdays.

For dessert we shared a cannoli ($8) with a crunchy shell that was loaded with pistachios and a perfectly prepared espresso. You wonder sometimes if places are worth the hype. Franny's is! You might pay a bit more, but in our book it's worth every penny!
