Cititour Review:

If you’ve ever had the chance to visit Spain, you know how incredible the food is there.  If on the other hand you haven’t, and you’d like a little sampling, then check out Despaña, a Spanish specialty shop located in SoHo.  Despaña has a wonderful selection of foods from this gastronomically proud nation.

I stopped in because the store front reminded me of when I lived in Spain.  It had that old world charm.  Inside, it only got better.   They had oils, breads, and olives to taste.  Some of the food is basically just grocery store food that you would find in Spain.  Out back, however, is where it gets a little more interesting.  The deli counter serves bocadillos (That’s sandwiches in English).  They’re served on ciabatta bread and you can choose from different imported meats and cheeses to fill them up.  If a bocadillo is too big for your tastes, then choose the smaller version of the sandwich called flautas or pintxos.

They also make Spanish tapas, and for me, this was the draw.  I appreciated the fact that I didn’t have to go out to a full service tapa restaurant to enjoy them.  I just wanted a quick fix.  Sort of like it was in Spain at the tapa bars, minus the beer.  I just ordered my tapas at the counter and sat down out back to eat them.  Very informal.  I chose some of my favorites like chorizo a la sidra (chorizo with cider), aceitunas alinades, (a selection of mixed olives) and of course the traditional Spanish tortilla.

I ended the visit with a churro for dessert.  Basically this is a deep fried doughnut with chocolate dipping sauce.  It reminded me of my many late nights in the Spanish bars, people spilling onto the streets at 4am and running to the churro vendors for something sweet to eat.  All I can say is İViva Despaña!
