In a part of town known for its Indian restaurants you will find Desi Galli offering a modern take on traditional Indian dishes. The narrow space has a small open kitchen up front with cafeteria-style seating below. If you're expecting a date spot or fine dining establishment, this is not it. It does a attract a young crowd, mostly students, who tend to gravitate toward the restaurant's popular kati rolls, sliders and samosas. Desi Galli also offers several vegan and gluten free options.
On this visit, I sampled the Seekh Kebab. Strips of lamb wrapped in fried egg inside a whole wheat Paratha, similar to a wrap. It's served with a spash of a spicy mint-cilantro chutney. To cool it down try a mango lassi or some iced Indian coffee.
Other offerings include spiced chick pea sliders, Chicken Tikka with spiced yogurt and salad, along with Lamb Biryani mixed with fragrant basmati rice and a yogurt sauce called Raita. Most dishes ring in at under seven bucks. For dessert, try some saffron flavored ice cream on a stick.
Desi Galli has a lot to offer, including friendly service.
[Update: The kathi rolls, India's answer to the burrito, include the delicious Australian lamb, a chicken tikka version and numerous veggie options. I added the lamb to the vegetable pav with potatoes, eggplant, cauliflower, tomato, onions and more; skipped the (delicious but how many carbs does one need?) buns and had a terrific main course that would work for lunch or dinner. Diners: note that Desi Galli offers approaches for Meatless Mondays and gluten-free selections including kathi roll wraps made from chickpea flour.
