The idea behind Laura Maniec's downtown wine bar was to create a casual atmosphere for learning about wine and drinking it, all in one friendly locale. Corkbuzz does just that: with a simple, homey décor and over 30 wines by the glass, this new wine bar and school is the ideal place to come and learn about wine. The wines are the centerpiece, but they're meant to be enjoyed with food, and Corkbuzz's menu doesn't disappoint. On offer are small plates like market pickles (5) and marinated olives (6), perfect for sharing over a cocktail hour drink. The Brussels sprouts with pecorino (9) have already developed a nearly cult following, as have the braised short ribs (22), which are melt-in-your-mouth tender. Other standouts include the crab beignets (13) and the bone marrow with marmalade (17). A cheese and charcuterie selection include Old and New World varieties, like goat cheese from Piedmont (6), blue from Vermont (6), Serrano ham from Spain (8) and Soprassata from Queens (7). Together, the perfect meal for wine tasting can be created, and any questions can be answered by the extremely knowledgeable sommeliers. The wines themselves are varied as well: sparkling cavas and Champagnes, whites, rosés and reds all grace the by-the-glass menu, with an even wider selection by the bottle. Standout offerings by the glass include Château Bel Air '87 (35) and Château Cantemerle '89 (52), though other more affordable and equally delicious choices are also available. Be sure to ask questions; it's in the spirit of the bar itself! Classes span a variety of topics, including wine pairing, regional wine and blind tastings. A schedule of currently offered classes is available on the Corkbuzz website. What Maniec has tried to create – a wine bar with a homey feel – seems to come through, though early reviewers complained about high prices. The quality stands up to the price tag, and if you're looking for a venue for learning about wine in a casual setting, there's nowhere better in New York. Emily Monaco
