Clinton Street Baking Co. has been a neighborhood fixture on the Lower East Side since 1981. It’s gleaming red retro storefront is a throwback to 1950s-style diners and with a menu to match. The dining room is bright with lots of windows looking onto the street. A well-worn stainless steel counter feeds hungry diners while also serving as a local watering hole. The daytime menu is big on breakfast, which might explain the long lines for brunch on weekends. Get there early for Pancakes with Warm Maple Butter, Brioche French Toast, Chicken & Waffles and Eggs Benedict. The Southern Breakfast could feed a lumberjack with two eggs (any style), sugar-cured bacon, cheesy grits and fried green tomatoes. Southern Fried Chicken is offered for dinner along with an oversized burger dripping with cheddar on a brioche bun. Get it with a side of crunchy Vidalia onion rings. You won’t be disappointed. Clinton Street Baking is the kind of place where you can unwind with a beer or cocktail, enjoy some comfort foods and also enjoy life while you're at it.
