Cititour Review:

Who doesn't love a good grilled cheese sandwich?  The folks at Cheese Grille on the Lower East Side are making it irresistable.  Located in a sliver of shop on Allen Street that once occupied a sausage joint, Cheese Grille has made sure that it stands out.  A giant mural in a rainbow of colors is an eye-stopper as buses loaded with tourists whiz by.  But locals seem to like it just as much.

The restaurant has a lot going for it.  Laid back management that gives the place a carefree feeling luring in hipsters looking for a sandwich and a beer, and young families looking for a deal.  It's a good mix.  And the food we tried was also very good.

We counted eight varieties of grilled cheese sandwiches starting with cheddar on Lavain Pullman bread to a "Sloppy Joe" with cheddar, ground beef, marscapone and pickled jalapenos.  The ham and cheese is excellent; crispy bread from Balthazar's oozing with gooey gruyere, a thick slice of ham, and caramelized onions.  A healthy dose dijon cuts the sweetess of the onions making this grilled cheese one to remember.  You can also get it filled with avocado, bacon or pepperoni.  Sandwiches range in price from $6-$9 and are also available on gluten-free bread.  Also on the menu are nachos with cheese or grande (with the works), sweet potato tots, cheese fries and oversized onion rings.  It may not be the healthiest of food, but it sure is comforting.

A nice selection of beers are also on tap including Narragansett, Sixpoint and Duval between $5-$8 a glass and bottles of wine at offered at reasonable prices.  The most expensive bottle was just under forty dollars.  Cap it all off with a sweet grilled cheese, including one filled with nutella and bananas on brioche with a scoop of ice cream.

Cheese Grille is open 7 days a week, and until 3am Thursday thru Saturday making it a perfect spot for late night munchies.
