I don't think Joey Ramone was thinking about chocolate when the Ramones were hanging out in the back alley behind CBGB's. The graffiti strewn unnamed alley (1 Extra Place) has recently given way to a line of lovely shops; among them Bespoke Chocolates.
While the exterior of the shop is ultra-modern, inside you'll find a warm, lovingly designed chocolate shop, and Chocolatier Rachel Zoe Insler hard at work. Insler studied her craft under Master Chocolatier Keith Hurdman. Her chocolates are as exqusite to look at as they are to pop in your mouth.
The signiture items are the Pretzel-Covered Sea-Salted Caramels, hand rolled and covered with a crunchy layer of Martin's pretzels. You'll also find scrumptious flavors like passionfruit, strawberry balsamic, rosemary vanilla and "chai spice", made with an exotic blend of ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. There's nothing ordinary about Bespoke Chocolates and the prices reflect it. Each chocolate runs $2.25. But even these days when everyone seems to be tightening their belt, these chocolates are worth opening your belt for.
