Cititour Review:

Having taught New York about the intricacies of every type of Italian food, Mario Batali has decided to educate us about the virtues of Spanish cuisine, particularly tapas. And after even one visit to Bar Jamon (or its slightly pricier sibling, Casa Mono), odds are you'll be signing up for more lessons. Early birds (the place opens at 5) have the best chance of snatching one of the two dozen seats here; come later at your own risk. But once you find a chair, be prepared to get up again: you actually belly up the bar to select one of the dozens of fabulous wines – mostly Spanish, of course—and your choice of tapas, all of which are served cold or at room temperature. Pan con tomate, crusty bread topped with a crushed tomato-garlic spread delighted not just me, but also my friend, an avowed tomato-hater. Lots of garlic also brings extra flavor to divine bits of marinated calamari mixed with raddichio. Chorizo, sliced like salami and accented by pickled red peppers. is delicious and filling, as is the house's signature dish, jamon redondo iglesias (ham that's been aged for 18 months). One can happily make a meal out of the cheeses on tap, from the buttery Il Cantu to creamy Garotxa (a mild goat cheese) or the wonderful, rosemary-crusted Romao. Two can eat decently here for $50, though wine will jack up the bill considerably. No matter what, it's a lot cheaper than a plane ticket to Barcelona.
