One of London’s best loved restaurants, Hawksmoor, is now open just steps away from Manhattan’s Gramercy Park. The restaurant is known for its dry-aged steaks cooked over live charcoal and award-winning cocktail program. It is located inside the historic United Charities Building which has been closed from public view for over a century. The carefully-restored Assembly Hall that gave a platform to civic pioneers such as Jane Addams, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, now serves as a grand dining room welcoming the people of New York once more.
Co-owners and friends, Huw Gott and Will Beckett are passionate about food, traveling the United States in search of the best farmers, ranchers and fishermen to source American beef, sustainable seafood and small-farm produce. “Opening a restaurant in New York City has been a dream of ours for so many years, and it has been a genuine privilege to get to know the city, its restaurants and restaurateurs so well over the many years of working towards this opening,” said Beckett.
Steaks dominate the menu - Rib-eye, Porterhouse, T-Bone, Strip, and Prime Rib Chop – along with sauces such as Bone Marrow Gravy, Anchovy Hollandaise and Bayley Hazen Hollandaise. The menu by Group Executive Chef Matt Brown (formerly Head Chef at three Michelin-starred Restaurant Marco Pierre White and La Tante Claire) and Executive Chef Matt Bernero (formerly Head Chef of Minetta Tavern) also features Charcoal-Roasted Bone Marrow Oysters; Charcoal-Roasted Scallops with white port and garlic; and Old Spot Pork Belly with vinegar slaw.
Mains include a Veal Chop with fried oysters; Charcoal-Roasted Maine Lobster; and Cast-iron Filet Steak topped with bone marrow skirlie. Triple Cooked Chips, Macaroni & Cheese, Creamed Spinach, and Caesar Salad with Cantabrian Anchovies are counted among the sides. For dessert, there is Sticky Toffee Pudding and Maple Custard Tart with maple & crème fraiche ice cream and shaved pecan praline.
The cocktail menu offers London favorites, like the Hawksmoor Calling with gin, local honey, and Lustau Manzanilla sherry; Amaro Coretto, a nod to the espresso martini; and Full Fat Old Fashioned with brown butter bourbon and extra-aged rye.
Hawksmoor is located at 109 E 22nd St, New York, NY (212) 777-1840.
